Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year) began this past Wednesday at sundown, September 28, 2011 which turned Tishri 1, 5772 on the Hebrew calendar. Keep in mind the Jewish day always begins at nightfall. (Gen 1:5b, “And the evening and the morning were the first day”)

The Feast of Trumpets (also called Rosh Hashanah or Yom Teruah) begins by the blowing of trumpets (shofars or rams horns). There are 100 blasts of the shofar:

  • Tekiah blast“- awakening sound, one long blast (3 second)
  • Shevarim, “broken”- three shorter ones- weeping, lamenting, broken heart
  • Teruah, “alarm”, nine quick blasts in short succession (totaling 3 seconds)
  • These series are blown 11 times for a total of 99 blasts
  • After that, the final blast is knows as Tekiah Hagodolah, “great blast” or “THE LAST TRUMP”! (minimum of 10 seconds)

Rosh Hashanah began 10 Days of Awe that will end on Yom Kippur.  Yom Kippur is also called the Day of Atonement begins at nightfall Friday evening October 8 is  Tishri 10 on the Hebraic calendar. Yom Kippur ends the 40 days of Teshuvah (repentance, turning back to God). For 40 days they have been reading aloud Psalm 27, as they make a Chuppah (canopy or covenant covering) over themselves and their loved ones. They have also been making restitution to those who they have harmed, giving to the poor and doing acts of kindness. (things we should do daily, but neglect)

At the time of the blowing of the trumpets on Rosh Hashanah, it is believed by the observing Jewish people that these blasts are heard in heaven and 3 books are opened. Malachi 3:16, “Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, And the LORD listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the LORD And who meditate on His name. (17) “They shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him. (18) Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.” (Also see Revelation 20:12)

  1. Book of the Righteous sealed with the seal of God who would immediately be written for good life the next year (Revelation 3:5)
  2. Book of the Unrighteous, who would be judged during the year; the totally unrighteous whose names are blotted out.(Ps 69:28)
  3. Book of the Intermediate, those who are not completely righteous or wicked. They would have until the Day of Atonement to make restitution and get right with God or they would not be in the Book of Life. (Joel 3:14)

L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu
Literal Hebrew to English Translation: “May you be inscribed (in the Book of Life) for a good year.” This traditional Rosh HaShanah greeting wishes others a good year and is often shorted to “Shanah Tovah” (Good Year).

Years ago, the Rabbis realized that Ha’Satan (The Accuser) actually has the numberical value of the Hebrew letters of 364. They believed that there was one day that Ha’satan did not have access to them, The Day of Atonement which is the day when the atoning blood was put on the Mercy Seat on the Holy of Holies for the sins of the nation.

As a believer, I am spending the Days of Awe praying for our nation, the nation of Israel and for the Jewish people to find Jesus as their Messiah.

Ezekiel 22:30, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.”

How many is our LORD going to find this year? Are you one of those who stand in the gap? This Sunday is the World Wide Day of Prayer For Jerusalem. Pray for the peace fo Jerusalem.

Every Hebrew month has a Tribe, Constellation and Hebrew letter associated with it. These hold keys to our promises for that month and help us to pray in line with God’s timing and to get our lives into time with His specific appointed times.

Tishri (Tishrei) is known as the ‘seventh month’ in the Bible according to the Biblical Calendar and is the ‘first month’on the civil calendar. The name of Tishri is never found in the Bible since it is a Babylonian name. It is called the ‘seventh month’ and one time called ‘Ethanim‘, meaning ‘enduring‘, meaning permanent streams still flowed. (I Kings 8:2)

This is the most Holy Day (holiday) intensive month on the Jewish Calendar. This month begins the numerical year change from 5771 to 5772, the years since Creation. (Much controversy: Rabbinical teaching states that there are 165 missing years, which would actually put us 5937 if this is the case. Whatever the case, we are nearing the time that the 7th Day of Rest begins if 1 day = 1,000 years, 2 Peter 3:8)

  • Tishri 1 Rosh Chodesh Nissan
  • Tishri 1 the year changes from 5770 to 5771- Head of the Year (la Shana Tova!- May you have a good year)
  • Tishri 1 is the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) (Yom Teru’ah) at sundown night before (9/29/11) (Judgment is rendered)
  • Tishri 1 begins the Days of Awe (9/29/11-10/8/11)
  • Tishri 2 is the 2nd day of Feast of Trumpets
  • Tishri 2 (this year) is Shabbat Shuva (the Sabbath of Returning) which falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
  • Tishri 3 is the Fast of Gedaliah (Zechariah 8:19)
  • Tishri 10 is the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) at sundown night before (10/8/11) (Judgment is sealed)
  • Tishri 14 begins the 7 Day Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) at sundown the night before (10/12/11 – 10/19/11)
  • Tishri 21 is Hoshana Rabbah (Day 7) The Great Salvation (when Judgment is delivered)
  • Tishri 22 is Shemini Atzeret (in Israel) (Lev 23:34), Rejoicing in the Torah (ends yearly cycle of Torah reading)
  • Tishri 23 is Shemini Atzeret (outside of Israel)

TRIBE- Ephriam,  Ephraim is the 2nd born of Joseph and his name means ‘double portion’. He was the 2nd born, but always mentioned first because of his leadership qualities. His symbol is a cluster of grapes, in remembrance of the double portion of grapes the 12 spies brought from the Promised Land. The only 2 spies that had a good report were Joshua from the Tribe of Ephraim and Caleb from the Tribe of Judah. Both Tribes of Judah and Ephraim have leadership and kingly qualities which resulted in the splitting of the land with King Jeraboam (north, Ephraim) and King Rehaboam (south, Judah). His weakness was idol worship and strength was his leadership qualities (Joshua & Samuel)

CONSTELLATION / MAZAL- Libra (the Scales) The Hebrew word is Mazanaim, ‘the scales weighing’.  This month’s constellation symbolizes the divine judgments of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur, when men’s deeds are weighed in judgment. God created everything in perfect balance in the universe, but man was given a free will to choose and because of Adam all men have sinned, therefore all of our righteousness is as ‘filthy rags’. Without Jesus paying the price for our sins, we could never measure up to God’s righteousness. Now we have been made righteous.

LETTER- Lamed  This letter is the 12th letter of the Hebrew Aleph Bet having a numerical value of 30. The pictograph of Lamed is of a cattle goad or shepherd’s staff and is the tallest letter of all and is considered to be the heart of the Aleph Bet. Lamed symbolizes 1) control 2) to prod or urge forward 3) to go toward or forward 4) a tongue 5) learn 6) teach. Each stanza of Psalm 119:89-96 begin with Lamed and tell us that God’s authority controls and protects us like a shepherd’s staff. This is a month to learn of righteousness, or “God’s ways of doing and being right“.

Tishri in History

  • 1- Adam’s birthday
  • 2, 1941- Experimental executions began at Auschwitz near southern Poland
  • 6, 1948- Egypt launched a large-scale offensive against the Negev region of Israel. This was part of the War of Independence, an attack by five Arab armies designed to “drive the Jews into the sea.”
  • 8, 825 BC- The Jewish people began a 14-day celebration to dedicate the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, also known as Solomon’s Temple.
  • 10, 1312 BC (Hebrew year 2449), Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the second set of Tablets, indicating that God had forgiven the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf. This day henceforth become Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when a person’s soul is cleansed of transgressions
  • 10, 1973- Start of the Yom Kippur War
  • 11, 1941- SS Chief Helmut Knochen ordered the systematic destruction of synagogues in Paris.
  • 13, 2000- At the start of the Palestinian intifada, two Israeli reserve soldiers were brutally lynched at a Palestinian police station in Ramallah.
  • 16, 1349- The Jewish population of Krems, Germany, was massacred in the Black Death riots. They were accused of spreading the disease of bubonic plague saying they had poisoned the well water, resulting in 25 million deaths.
  • 17, 1867-Blood Libel charges triggered anti-Jewish riots in Romania. Jews were accused of killing children to drink the blood.
  • 20, 1973-  Israeli forces, led by Ariel Sharon,  crossed to the western side of the Suez Canal in a decisive battle of the Yom Kippur War.  A few days later, Israeli troops trapped the Egyptian Third Army, leaving it without any means of resupply, thus effectively ending the war.
  • 21, 1946- Following the Nuremberg trials, 10 Nazi war criminals were hanged. The hanging of the 10 Nazis eerily echoed the 10 sons of Haman who were hanged in the Purim story. Incredibly, this day on the Jewish calendar is Hoshana Raba, the traditional day of judgment for the nations of the world
  • 22, 825 BC- King Solomon said farewell to the Jewish people who had come to Jerusalem for a 14-day ceremony dedicating the Holy Temple (1-Kings 8:66)
  • 24, 336 BC- Ezra and Nechemia convened the Jewish community in Jerusalem. There, as recorded in the biblical Book of Nechemia (ch. 9), they recalled the major events of Jewish history, and pledged to uphold the ancient covenant
  • 26, 1973- A cease-fire resolution was passed by the U.N. Security Council to halt the Yom Kippur War. Shuttle diplomacy by Henry Kissinger compelled Israel and Egypt to accept the cease-fire. Fighting, however, would continue for another four days. In the war, Israel suffered the loss of 2,600 soldiers and 800 tanks. Four years later, Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat would visit Jerusalem and announce his readiness to forge a permanent peace deal
  • 28, 1930- The British government issued the Passfield White Paper, a formal statement of policy in Palestine. The paper was an attempt to appease the Arabs in the aftermath of the 1929 riots: During six days of Arab rioting in Jerusalem, Gaza, Hebron and Tzfat, 135 Jews were killed and more than 300 wounded. The White Paper criticized the Jewish Agency for promoting Jewish employment opportunities, claiming that it damaged economic development of the Arab population. Further, the paper required that Jews obtain permission from the British authorities to purchase land. The result was that Jewish immigration was greatly hindered.
  • 30, 1958- The foundation stone was laid for Israel’s Knesset building in Jerusalem. The Knesset houses the governing body of Israel’s democracy.

Comet Elenin was discovered on 10 December 2010 by  Leonid Elenin, a Russian amateur astronomer. It will make its closet path to earth October 16, 2011 during Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles. The timing of the passes to earth give Elenin its significance. The first pass will be during Rosh Hashanah, September 28-29, 2011 and the second pass during Sukkot.

Astronomer Elenin wrote September 3, 2011: As many readers already know, Comet Elenin has begun the irreversible process of  breaking up.

Comets are ‘big frozen dirt balls’. Newsweek’s article of 1998 regarding Hale Bopp Comet says, “This comet was last seen in these parts 4200 years ago (before Abraham of 2213 BC). “Comets are big frozen dirtballs, an estimated 100 billion of them were created at the same time as the sun and the planets. Most of their days comets float anonymously in a halo called an ort cloud, a backwoods of space way past Pluto. But once in a while gravitational jolts from passing stars send a comet hurdling from the kingdom of ice into a trip around the sun. Comets are of the wandering children of the solar system. They were present at the creation some 4 billion years ago and living in the cold storage in the outer solar system they haven’t changed much.”

God many times will use a comet as a sign of upcoming events. Job 38:22, “Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail(23) Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?

Comet Elenin was about 2-3 miles (3-5 km) wide, while the sun is roughly 865,000 miles  (1,392,082 km) across.  This is small compared to the ‘giant’ or larger comets seen in our atmosphere. The Comet of 1729, Comet McNaught (below), Haley’s Comet and Hale Bopp Comet were giants compared to Elenin. (see 9/25/11 blog of Significant Comets)

Below is a chart from Astronomy.com regarding the timing of Elenin’s pass.

The timing of the passings on the Hebrew calendar month make it very interesting. On the 28th it will be the beginning of the moon cycle (head of the month). When the moon begins a cycle and when the moon is full it always affects the earth, such as high tides and more chances of mining accidents. How this will affect the earth is still to be seen. However, all reports are that it has been breaking up and nothing will happen.

Next on the calendar is Comet Garradd……………….9/22/11 – 4/19/12

Isaiah 65:8, Thus says the Lord, “As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it.’ So will I do for My servant’s sake, that I may not destroy them all.”

The Fall Feasts of the LORD  that begin this week are a time of harvest of the grapes. Harvest is a judment word. The NLT Bible of Galatians 6:7 reads, “Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.”

When the grapes are picked, they are picked in a cluster. In that cluster of grapes, there are small, big, ripe and overripe grapes. Grapes are the one of the last things to be harvested and the grapes are always picked in a cluster, not individually. When a nation is judged, it is not the individual that is judged, but the nation. The Bible talks much about the iniquity being “full” and the “land vomiting them out”. [Genesis 15:6, Ezekiel 9:9, Leviticus 18:29]. I believe what we are experiencing in the earth right now is the harvest of sin and wickedness.

When Egypt was judged, the Hebrews in Goshen were spared. The last plague was the death of the first born son, but the Hebrews were spared by the blood of the lamb applied to their doorposts. (Ex 12) When Jericho was judged, Rahab the harlot and all her ‘unrighteous’ family were spared by a scarlet thread hanging from her window. (Joshua 2 & 6) In both cases, the people inside were not spared by their righteousness, but by the signs of the blood- pointing ahead to the Blood of Jesus. Not only were their lives protected, but all their possessions.

In the New Testament we have the example of a believer protecting their home. I Corinthians 7:14, “For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.”

Stand in the gap for your family and allow God to draw them with His goodness and you daily take communion for your cluster, those who you are connected with naturally and spiritually. It is time to make much of the Blood of Jesus and overcome (Revelation 12:11). It is the goodness of God that leads men to repentance. When they are spared, I believe it will draw our loved ones to salvation.

This does not mean they will be saved and go to heaven, but they will be protected by your faith in the Blood of Jesus during judgment times, when times are hard. 2 Timothy 3:1 reads in the Amplified Bible, “But understand this, that in the last days will come (set in) perilous times of great stress and trouble [hard to deal with and hard to bear].”

The first example of a family protected by the faith of one righteous person was during the flood, when Noah and his family were spared. The ark was covered with “pitch”, which in Hebrew is kaphar, the same root word as kapporeth, the only word used for the Mercy Seat. The Mercy Seat is the covering over the Ark of the Covenant that contained the Law, the Ten Commandments. James 2:13, “Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

Hear this- If you side with the sin side right now you will be caught in the consequences as the cry of sin comes up to God in fullness. It is time to CRY OUT FOR MERCY, the mercy that is found in the Blood on the Mercy Seat in heaven! Let’s hold back judgment and earnestly desire with God for “all men to be saved.” James 5:7 tells us the Husbandman (Father God) is waiting for the harvest. It is time to reap souls for the Kingdom of God. Joel 3:14, “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.”

Newsweek magazine of 1998 had an article of Hale Bopp Comet and explained comes as ‘frozen dirt balls’. It reads, “This comet was last seen in these parts 4200 years ago (before Abraham of 2213 BC).Comets are big frozen dirtballs, an estimated 100 billion of them were created at the same time as the sun and the planets.

Job 38:22,”Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail(23) Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?”

Comets are often seen as a bad omen, appearing years before a major war or natural disaster.  A few examples are of a comet was sited before the Exodus, the first Passover and the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.  In Natural History, Pliny wrote that it was a “terrible comet…(that) was twisted like a coil, and it was very grim to behold.” Exodus 9:19 records  “So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.” The Jewish Talmud records ‘stones fell in Egypt and were very hot.’ Joesphesus wrote about a  heavenly appearance resembling a sword in the sky before the destruction of the Temple.

October 2011  Astronomy magazine carried an interesting article on comets. The first paragraph caught my attention, “..This makes them an object of popular fascination and has led to their common association as omens of significant events on Earth. (The destruction of Jerusalem by Roman Emperor Titus and the Norman conquest of England are two famous examples)”  [please remember astronomy is a science, astrology is witchcraft]

Below are come significant comets of our era and the coinciding historic events on earth. Genesis 1:14 tells us the the heavenly lights are God’s signposts, for signs for seasons. Comets have no light in themselves, but only reflect the Sun.  If you are on a journey you will see the signs closer together and larger as you near your destination. So it is with the destination God has ordained for the time of the end.

Hale Bopp Comet

  • First seen when Noah was building the Ark, so called the Noahic Comet
  • In July 1995, this comet was discovered by American amateur astronomers Alan Hale and Tom Bopp. The giant size was remarkable, 25-100 miles across, making it the largest comet ever discovered.
  • The first discovery in our atmosphere was the 6th of Iyar, the 45th anniversary of the rebirth of Israel as a nation
  • The closest pass to earth was March 23, 1997 on the Jewish Festival of Purim, when there was also a partial lunar eclipse
  • Hale Bopp Comet was a sign in the last decade of the last century of the last day before the millennium last day. (As in the days of Noah- Mt 24:37; Luke 17:26)

Kohoutek Comet

  • August 9, 1974 (Av 9- Tish B’Av) this comet was seen in our solar system
  • All nine leaders of the Common Market fell during this comet’s passing
  • President Nixon departed from office of President of the United States during this comet’s passing

Halley’s Comet

  • One of the first comets named discovered by Sir Edmund Halley. In 1705 he wrote an article stating this comet sighted in 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1682 and predicted it would return in 1758. He died in 1742 so did not live to see this sighting.
  • 12 BC when Herod was expending the Temple platform
  • 66 AD,  4 years before the destruction of the Temple
  • 1910, 4 years prior to WWI
  • 1986, 4 years prior to the Persian Gulf War

Three Significant Eclipse Comets

  • May 17, 1882, a comet called Comet Wells was viewed in Egypt during a total solar eclise (This is the year the Russian Jews began to make aliyah)
  • May 20, 1947, this comet known as The Southern Comet was visible during a total solar eclipse (1 year before Israel became a nation)
  • November 1, 1948, The Eclipse Comet (the year Israel became a nation)

Shoemaker-Levy-9 Comet

  • Dicovered by Eugene & Carolyn Shoemaker & David Levy March 24, 1994  (9th comet discovery as a team)
  • First comet to be seen orbiting a planet, orbiting Jupiter rather than the Sun like other comets
  • Nicknamed the String of Pearls, broke into 21 fragments resembling pearls

Hyakutake Comet

  • This comet is estimated to be seen every 40,000 years
  • Discovered in January 30, 1996 by Yuji Kyakutake of Japan.
  • Passover 1996 comet Hykutake makes the closest encounter with the earth, one year later Hale Bopp Comet makes the same point on Passover 1997
  • It seemed to hang over Jerusalem as it passed over on Passover 1996 and was seen as a pale green in color from the gases being given off by it.

Elenin Comet

  • Expected to be closest to the earth during Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets) September 29, 2011.

Every Hebrew month has a Tribe, Constellation and Hebrew letter associated with it. These hold keys to our promises for that month and help us to pray in line with God’s timing and to get our lives into time with His specific appointed times.

Elul is known as the ‘sixth month’ in the Bible according to the Biblical Calendar and is the twelfth month on the civil calendar. 6 is the number of man and 12 is the number of government. The name of this month is never mentioned in the Bible. The Aramaic (language spoken during the time of Jesus) meaning of Elul is ‘to search’. This is the month to search ourselves to make sure we are ready to meet our Lord.

“Elul” has been interpreted as an acronym, with its Hebrew letters “Aleph,” “Lamed,” “Vav,” “Lamed” representing the words “Ani L’Dodi V’Dodi Li” (Song of Songs: 6:3). The words mean “I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine,” where my “Beloved” is God, and “I” am the Jewish People. This month is all about relationships & restoring relationships; first with God and then with our fellow man.

This month is called “the month of repentance”, “the month of mercy” and “the month of forgiveness”. This is a time of preparing your heart in preparation for the High Holidays (holy days) of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This month follows the months that were anniversaries of the sins of the Golden Calf, the sins of the spies, the anniversaries of the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples and precedes month before the year changes to 5772 – Tishri 1. (September 29, 2011)

This is a time for cleansing and historically is where we got our tradition of Fall housecleaning. Everything must be prepared to meet the King. (Rosh Chodesh Tishri is a time when Kings are crowned) We are to prepare our spiritual and natural houses for a visitation with the King Jesus. The steps of the cleansing are: (1) “Azivas Ha’Chet“, leaving the sins, first finding the sin by true heart seaching (2) “Charata“, regret and remorse for doing the sin, true repentance (3) “Vidduy” confessing the sin (4) “Kabala L’habo“, making a firm decision NOT to do the sin again.

The first day of the month of Elul, during which Jews begin to repent in earnest in anticipation of the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which begin on the first of Tishrei, the next month. Starting on Rosh Chodesh Elul, and continuing through the rest of the month, the shofar is blown daily in the synagogue, and Jews who hew to Sephardic traditions recite slichot, penitential prayers, every morning; Ashkenazic Jews do not begin reciting slichot until the week before Rosh Hashanah.

Teshuvah The Hebrew word ‘shuv’ means ‘turn’. Teshuvah means “to turn” or “to repent”. We are each to repent when we sin, “miss the mark”, of God’s standards, but this is a time of “national repentance”Teshuvah traditions: From the second day of Elul to the 28th day, the shofar is blown after morning services every weekday. The custom is for a wake-up to sleepers, designed to rouse us from our complacency. It is a call to repentance. The blast of the shofar is to be a very piercing sound. Greetings in correspondence or audible is the blessing, “May your name be written”, referring to the Days of Awe that begin Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets) and ends on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) when the books in heaven are opened for God’s decisions regarding the coming year.

Also, Psalm 27 is read each day for 40 days.”The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?” (Light- soul; Salvation- spirit; Strength- body)

The King is in the Field! What does this mean? Elul is a time when the King would leave his throne and come into the field to meet his subjects, on their territory, just as they are. Nothing formal, no special pomp. When the Jewish people would ‘go up’ to Jerusalem 3 times a year to meet with God at His appointed times, these were ‘holy‘ days, the Feasts of the Lord when no work is permitted. This month is designated as the month that God has chosen to come and meet with His people in their ordinary, mundane lives. (It is easy for each of us to look and sound spiritual, but it is another thing to act as God would have us to act when no one is watching) Elul was the only month of the year that the King would come out smiling, meeting his people. All their work was for the King and at this time of closeness, they inspect their work closely to make sure it is ‘fit for a King’. (SELAH)

TRIBE- GAD Gad’s name means “a troop” and also “good fortune“, mazol tov. Gad’s goal is to be an overcomer. This is to be a month of answered prayers because they are coming from a clean heart. He also represents those who flits around in society, cannot settle down (gadabout). Gad’s tribe never settled into the Promised Land, but stayed on the east side of the Jordan River and were easy prey for the enemy, one of the first taken into captivity. The Lost Books say that he was a “shepherd and strong man but a murderer at heart.”

His symbol was of 3 tents because he never settled down. It is interesting that the Chinese symbol of the word “come” is those same 3 tents, but with cross in the middle tent. In Chinese the tent is a symbol of a man and the cross is a character representing completion or the number 10. ‘As Gad comes to the cross, he will overcome his old nature.’ (SELAH)

Jacob’s parting words to his son are recorded in Genesis 49:19, “Gad, a troop shall overcome him; but he shall overcome at last.” His worst enemy was himself. Isn’t that what God is trying to change in each of us right now during Teshuvah?

Moses prophetic word for Gad was recorded in Deuteronomy 33:20, “And of Gad he said, “Blessed is he that enlargeth Gad.” I believe we will each find a special blessing of our Lord when we help each other to overcome our personal weaknesses.

CONSTELLATION/MAZAL- VIRGO (Bethulah, The Virgin) Israel is God’s beloved, and the bride in Song of Songs says, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine“; Jeremiah 31:21 reads, “Come back again, my virgin Israel, return to your cities here“. The Church is the Bride of Christ and must put away any idols that have taken His place in our hearts.

“The Promised Seed of the Woman” (Genesis 3:15) The brightest star in Virgo is Spica (Latin), which means ‘the branch’. The Hebrew word for this star is Tsemech (branch), but this word is only used for the Messiah.

LETTER- Yud (pronounced yode) The 10th letter in the Hebrew Aleph-Bet with the numerical value of 10. It is the smallest of the letter an the most used and being the smallest represents humility. Since Jesus upholds the world by the Word of His power (Heb 1:3), and Yod is part of every Hebrew letter (and therefore every Hebrew word), Yod is considered the starting point of the presence of God in all things – the ‘spark’ of the Spirit in everything. It is also a picture of humility. The pictograph is a arm or hand, suggesting reaching towards heaven, prayer or submission. This letter symbolizes order, provision and covenant possession, and carries the meaning of ‘creation’. (Hebrew4christians.com/grammar)

Yod also symbolizes work or a deed done. Psalm 119:73-80 tell us of the work of God’s hand in our lives. (Psalm 119 is divided up according to the Hebrew Aleph-Bet and each line of 73-80 begin with the letter Yod)

Yod is also the first letter of the divine name of Jehovah, YHWH (Yod Hey Vav Hey)

Historical Happenings in Elul

  • 1- Moses went back up the mountain to intercede for the nation of Israel after the ‘golden calf’ incident, and when the tablets containing the 10 Commandments were broken. Now, he will receive the 2nd set of tablets that will be put into the Ark of the Tabernacle.
  • 1- Jews began to return from captivity in Babylon (Haggai 1:1)
  • 4, 1391- Massacre in Barcelona, Spain

Today the Republic of Vanuatu (island nation in the South Pacific east of Australia) had 3 earthquakes of 7 or above www.USGS.gov  and 5 smaller quakes– all on the same day. The first one was 7.5 at 16.55 UTC, the second was 7.1 at 16.55 UTC, the third was 7.0 at 18.19 UTC.  The 7.5 quake at 16.55  UTC was later changed to a 7.1, but I got an email alert on both.

It is interesting to note that the quakes were on Saturday (Shabbat) and the epicenter was on Sunday (1st day of the week).

The Hebrew letters always carry a numberical meaning and Zayin carries the numerical value of 7. The pictograph of Zayin was ‘a sword’ and both the symbol and number of Zayin mean to cut, particularly to ‘cut time’. On God’s calendar, there are 7 days in a week, 7 weeks of 7 between the Passover Feasts and Pentecost, 7th month is Nisan- when the new year begins on the bibical calendar, every 7 years the land rests (shemitah year) and the Jubilee year begins after 7 sets of 7 years.

The Mishnah tells us that: “No days were as festive for Israel as the 15th of Av and Yom Kippur.”  Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) symbolizes God’s forgiveness for the Golden Calf and Tu B’Av symbolizes God’s forgiveness for the unbelief of the 10 spies culminating the spread of fear and unbelief that kept the nation of Israel from entering into the Promised Land for 40 years.

The 9th of the Hebrew month of Av is the lowest point in month and the 15th of Av is the highest. Both have historical meanings that carry through to this day. This day has become known as the “Jewish Valentine’s Day“, when unmarried women would become betrothed.

There are multiple negative historical events that have followed the cycle on Tisha B’ Av (9th of Av) which began with the nation of Israel choosing to follow the negative report of 10 of the 12 spies coming out of the Promised Land. There are five major historical events associated with Tu B’ Av (15th of Av).

  1. End of the Wilderness deaths- 40 years following God’s decree that those who were 20 years of age and above ended. History teaches that each year on the 9th of Av all those who had been 20 or above would dig graves and lay in those graves on that day. The next morning those who were still alive would get out of the grave and know they had at least another year of life in the Wilderness. On the 40th year no one died. They thought they had the date wrong so they kept changing the date and by Tu B’Av they realized all was forgiven and they could not enter the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership.
  2. This was first precedent of equal rights for women in the Bible. The daughters of  Manesseh’s lineage dared to believe God for a new thing, land given to women. (Numbers 27:1-11 & Numbers 36) Their father Zelophehad died in the wilderness, but not because of his sins- his daughters made sure it was on the record that he did not side with Korah. These women were pushers, not quitters, “Lord I want the blessing! I want it in my body, I want it in my spirit, I want it financially, I want to be blessed in my ministry, I want it for my family, I want my blessing!”  All 5 daughters manifest a balance between the spirit of confrontation and a spirit of cooperation.
  3. Benjamin’s Tribe allowed to continue– Following the consequences of the sins of the perverted men from Tribe of Benjamin as recorded in Judges 19-21, only 600 males from the Tribe of Benjamin remained. The other 11 Tribes had taken an oath not to allow marriage from their tribe and now there was great mourning realizing Benjamin’s tribe would cease. On the 9th of Av they allowed the 600 males who were left were allowed to snatch virgins during an annual dance, so that the vow would not be violated and the tribe of Benjamin would continue.
  4. Wood for the 2nd Temple – Following the restoration of the Second Temple, wood was needed for the Temple altar and none was available near Jerusalem. Brave men were sent out to bring satisfactory wood before winter set in and the dead line to have the wood in the Temple was Tu B’ Av.
  5. Burials allowed during Bar Kochba Revolt, 132 AD– The Hebrew custom for burial was to bury the same day as the death so the bodies could not begin to decompose.   In 135 AD, the army besieged Bethar and on  the 9th of Av, the Jewish fast day commemorating the destruction of the first  and second Holy Temples, the walls of Bethar fell. After a fierce battle,  every Jew in Bethar was killed. Six days passed before the Romans allowed the  Jews to bury their dead.  This was a double miracle, in that, first, the Romans finally gave permission for the burial, and, second, in spite of the long period of time that had elapsed, the bodies had not decomposed. The permission was granted on Tu B’Av.

Let the Bride dance before her King!

The Hebrew month of Av is unusual this year in the fact that Av 1 falls on Aug 1 and Ramadan begins that same day.
  • Av is the most dreaded month on the Hebrew calendar with history repeatedly showing that if anything tragic is going to happen to Israel it will happen in the month of Av.
  • August is the normally the hottest month on the Gregorian calendar,  a critical time to prepare the crops for the harvest.
  • Ramadan is the most religious observances of the Islamic year, a month long fast during the daylight hours.
Every Hebrew month has a Tribe, Constellation and Hebrew letter associated with it. These hold keys to our promises for that month and help us to pray in line with God’s timing and to get our lives into time with His specific appointed times.

The three months of Tammuz, Av & Elul are the most challenging months for Israel. History repeatedly has shown that if anything tragic is going to happen to Israel it will happen in the months of Tammuz & Av. These three summer months heat up both naturally and spiritually. The kingdom of this world is fighting against God’s plans and promises for Israel. The beginning 9 days will continue prayerful struggle through Dire Straits, ending with the fast of Tisha B’Av, leading to the Love Dance of Tu B’Av on the 15th.

Av (Ab) is known as the ‘fifth month’ in the Bible according to the Biblical Calendar and is the Eleventh month on the civil calendar. According to E.W. Bullinger’s book on Numbers in Scripture 5 carries the meaning of Grace & 11 signifies disorder, disorganization, imperfection and disintegration.  Together 5 & 11 perfectly fit this month, with Av 9 being the lowest day on the Jewish calendar and Av 15 being the highest, a month for mountains and valleys in our life and world.

Av means father, and is used for the first 9 days of the month, then the name “Menachem Av” is used, meaning “The One Who comforts, the Av“, speaking of Father God who brings comfort to His people. Av is actually Ab from the first letters of the Aleph Bet.

Av is the month that the 12 spies returned from the Promised Land, 10 with an evil report and Joshua and Caleb believing God was bigger than the giants of the land. This is a month to hear, believe and proclaim the greatness of our God. Everyday the news will be speaking fear, but it is the time for the Church to speak faith and overcome all fear. It is high time to believe the report of the Lord!

Here are some historical events connected with this month (specifically watch the 9th day of Av)

  • Av 9, 1492 AD; King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled all Jews from Spain and Portugal. The last boat of Jews was beside Columbus’s ship waiting for the tide to set sail. I believe at this time the mandate to bring the gospel to the world changed hands from Sapin to the new America.

  • Av 27, 1868, the Klu Klux Klan lynched a Jew in Franklin, TN. Most people do not realize the KKK was against the black colored people and also the Jews.
  • Av 30, 1903; The 6th Zionist Congress met in Basle, Switzerland. Herzl presented a British proposal for a temporary Jewish homeland in Uganda, as a refuge for Russian Jews in immediate danger. The Uganda Program was rejected two years later. One project that gained traction was the Galveston plan which sent 9,300 Jews to Texas. In the end, it was understood that only the Land of Israel, with its deep historical and spiritual connections, would succeed as the Jewish homeland.

The 3 week period between Tammuz 17 and Av 9 (Tisha B’Av) are called ‘bein haMetzarim’, aka Between the Straits, Dire Straits. Lamentations 1:3, “Judah has gone into captivity, under affliction and hard servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest; all her persecutors overtake her in dire straits.” Fear is strong during these 21 days because of the historical events connected with these two dates. Av 9 this year will be Aug 9.

Av 9 is a fasting day listed in Zechariah 8:19.Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth [month], and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the   truth and peace.” Feast Days were appointed by God, but these Fast Days are appointed by man. These fasts centered on themselves, not sorrow for sin, but sorrow for thier loss. God is promising them that these days of fasting in fear and mourning will become days of gladness and joy.

TRIBE- Simeon, (Shimon) Simeon’s name is the same root word as the word ‘hearing’, but means to ‘hear and obey’.  His symbol is a pitcher with sword through it. His weaknesses were he was cruel and a fighter. His redeeming strengths were when he was teamed with Judah (praise)  he was able to hear and receive spiritually revelation knowledge.

Historically 10 of the 12 spies came out of the Promised Land on Av 9 with an evil report and the nation of Israel heard and believed the evil report. Av is the month to correct mistakes in regard to hearing– listening to gossip, slander and lies. Remember, Simeon means ‘to hear & to obey’.

Simeon is the 2nd son of Jacob and Leah. Jacob’s parting word to Simeon are found in Genesis 49:5, “Simeon and Levi [are] brothers; instruments of cruelty [are in] their dwelling place. (6) Let not my soul enter their council; let not my honor be united to their assembly; for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they hamstrung an ox. (7) Cursed [be] their anger, for [it is] fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.”

Dividing Simeon and Levi was action a redemptive gifting. Together they were cruel and got the Israelites into trouble, as recorded in Genesis 34 when these two brothers sought revenge for Diana’s being violated and disgraced by Shechem. Together the devised a plan that resulted in the killing of all the males in the city.

Simeon and Levi were divided by Simeon’s land being in the midst of Judah’s land and Levi not owning land, but being divided into all the territory of the Promised Land. Simeon became mighty in the army of God by being in the midst of praise, Judah. Left to himself he was a fighter, cruel, self willed, cursed with a demonic anger. But when he was teamed with Judah, he was strong in revelation, hearing and discernment.

CONSTELLATION/MAZAL- LEO “The Lion”- The lion symbolizes our encounter with raw force. The Lion is the king of the jungle and demands to rule alone. He represents pride– the collective noun for  a group of lions is a ‘pride’ of lions.

As the lion roars- this is the month for God’s people to roar! When God’s people roar it creates a protective covering and unlocks what is above you. The roar brings a vibration that brings a change into the atmosphere. My prayer, “May God give PM Benjamin Netanyahu the courage and strength of a lion as he takes Israel through to God’s perfect will, peace for the city of Jerusalem.” (photo by Natalia Rubin, used by permission)

The contellation of Leo is made up of Leo (the lion), Hydra (the serpent that takes up 1/3 of the ecliptic circle), Crater (the cup) and Corvus (the crow or ravin). Altogether they tell the last of the story of the heavens that began with Virgo (the virgin) and the birth of our Redeemer.  In Leo we see the Lion of the Tribe of Judah aroused for the rending of prey. Leo’s paws are over Hydra’s head as Crater pours out the cup of God’s wrath upon the serpent and Corvus is the bird of prey to devour the serpent. The brightest star in Leo is Regulus, ‘the king star’ which mean ‘treading underfoot’.

LETTER- TET (ryhymes with ‘mate’) is the 9th letter in the Hebrew with the value of 9. It means ‘to surround or to twist’. The ancient meaning is of a snake and the pictograph of Tet is a snake coiled inside a basket. The classical Hebrew script below resembles a snake.

The letter Tet also resembles a womb, which represents 9 months of pregnancy and the Hebrew word womb or belly is be-ten (Bet- house, inside & Tet- surround), meaning ‘a house that surrounds life’.

The Hebrew word for adversary or satan is sa-tan (Sheen- teeth, devour & Tet- snake), and tells us that an adversary is like Satan and is like the snake that devours life.

Tet is the least used letter of the scriptures. The first time it is used is in Genesis 1:4, “And God saw the light, that [it was] good (tov): and God divided the light from the darkness.” To me this reminds me that we are to take what the devil means for bad, and turn it around for the good by speaking, roaring and decreeing the Truth and the will of God.
