Elul 5779 – Teshuvah Day 29 (9/29/19)

This will be the last day of year 5779 on the Hebraic calendar. Tonight at sundown it will be 5780, Adam’s birthday. The calendar year begins with the 6th day of Creation. Sundown tonight begins Rosh HaShanah, the Head (rosh) of the Year (shanah). It is also called Yom Teruah (blowing of Trumpets- Lev 23:23-25), Feast of Trumpets, The Time of Jacob’s Trouble, Day of Remembrance, The Day of the Awakening Blast, Yom HaDin (Day of Judgment), The Opening of the Books, The Opening of the Gates, Yom HaKeseh (the Hidden Day).

My favorite name is Ha Kiddushin/Nesuin (Wedding of the Messiah). Joel 2:15-16, ….let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. (chuppah – khoop-paw’). This fits so perfect with our 40 day devotions of Song of Songs.

This is the 5th of the 7 Feasts of the LORD listed in Leviticus 23. Jesus has fulfilled Passover (Jesus is our Passover Lamb), Unleavened Bread (Jesus who knew no sin,  became sin for us), Firsts Fruits (Jesus was first raised from the dead), Pentecost (Acts 2, Church began), but the last 3 have not been fulfilled. They will in the last of the Last Days and Tribulation. These are Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles. All the first 4 were fulfilled on the very day that they had been following since the Wilderness journey from Exodus.

For all of the other 7 Feasts (moedim, fixed appointed times on God’s prophetic calendar), there is a historical significance, such as the First Passover in Egypt. The Feast of Trumpets is the only Feast that has no historical record, all is looking forward.

Matthew 24:36 (NLT) reads, ““However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.” This is wordage from the Feast of Trumpets and why this is a 2 day Feast. There had to be 2 witnesses that looked for the first sliver of the moon, and then they would light fires from mountain to mountain, or blow shofars from the mountain tops all over Israel, announcing the new year has begun. We may not know the ‘day or the hour’, but we should not be ignorant of the SEASON.

The greeting for these 2 days is “Shana Tova”, Happy New Year!!! Traditional food is to serve apples dipped in honey, and say “may you have a sweet New Year”.

MY TASHLICH EXPERIENCE YESTERDAY

Tashlich ceremony is done on the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Tashlich means ‘to cast off’. ‘cast away’ and is a ritual doen as a physical reminder of the human efforts to cast away one’s sins.

Micah 7:19 reads, “God will take us back in love; God will cover up our iniquities, You [God] will hurl all our sins into the depths of the sea.”

Nehemiah 8:1, “All the Jews gathered as one in the street that is front of the gate of water.” This was believed to be on Rosh Hashanah and the Tashlich ceremony was being observed.

The ceremony is performed beside a body of flowing water, or if there is not flowing water a large bowl of water is used or a mikvah. First you reflect on your short comings or unpaid vows to God the past year and then confess each sin as they have come to your mind and ask forgiveness from God. Next, empty pockets of any lint or crumbs as a symbol of God taking your sins away and throw it into the water.

Prayer, “Who is like You, God, who removes iniquity and overlooks transgression of the remainder of His inheritance. He does not remain angry forever because He desires kindness. He will return and He will be merciful to us, and He will conquer our iniquities, and He will cast off our sins into the depths of the seas. Give truth to Jacob, kindness to Abraham, like that you sore to our ancestors from long ago.”

I did this yesterday on the Texas City Dike beside the ship channel of the Gulf of Mexico. I took communion following my Tashlich observance. The reason this observance is so helpful to me is because I am very introspective, hard on my self and I end up beating myself up and feel I condemn myself. As I observe this ceremony I take communion, receiving the full assurance of my salvation, purchased in full by Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary.

When I got home it was pouring rain at the front of my home, no other place, just over the front door. And there was a huge rainbow over our home!!!! How awesome is that??? What a great God we serve.
