WHAT? The first night of Hanukkah begins this year on the Eve of Thanksgiving? How peculiar is this? It has not happened since 1888 and will not happen again until 2070 and 2165. So enjoy this Thanksgivukkah, you may not see another in your lifetime.
Both are days when we remember and celebrate the goodness of our God and remember His faithfulness. I have listed some similarities that I have seen.
GIVING OF THANKS
- HANUKKAH- Jewish people (and Hebraic observant Christians such as myself) celebrate the victory of 2178 years ago (165 BC) when the Maccabees won a 3 year battle to regain control of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. https://mbostrom2.com/2012/12/07/hanukkah-2012/ Each evening they light another candle on the 9 candle menorah called a Hanukkiyah. As they light the candle they give God thanks for the miracle of one day’s oil lasting 8 days. They thank God that He is still the ‘Lord our God, king of the universe’. The light reminds them of the victory over paganism.
- THANKSGIVING- Chapter 6 of the book called The Light and the Glory by Peter Marshall and David Manuel carries the most incredible history of the first Thanksgiving of 1623, when the Pilgrims planted their remaining precious seeds and experienced a drought that was sure to be their end. Realizing God was their only hope, they fasted and humbled themselves before God. Following was a 14 day gentle rain that turned a failing crop into a bumper crop!
ALL GLORY TO GOD!
- HANUKKAH- the Jewish people realized they had no hope without a miracle from God!
- THANKSGIVING- the Pilgrims realized they had no hope without a miracle from God!
BOTH KEPT US ALIVE
- HANUKKAH- About the WORD of God, food for our spirit man. The Jewish people, chosen of God, were set apart to keep the timing, laws, WORD of God alive. The Temple was the place of worship, where they met with Almighty God. Since man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God, the Bread of the Word was preserved.
- THANKSGIVING- About food for our body. God cares about mankind, God loves his creation and has a good plan for us. He loves this nation that was raised up in 1492 to be a place for His Chosen people to have a safe homeland until the rebirth of the nation Israel in 1948. The miracle of the dead corn stalks coming back to like preserved the Pilgrims.
The United States of American has roots of a Christian nation! I have a 2 CD series called, “Who Said We Are Not A Christian Nation?” This truth is not being taught to our children in public school so now would be a good time to play it in your car when you have a captive audience in your back seat.
NOTE: NEXT YEAR HANUKKAH WILL BE ON CHRISTMAS EVE! How cool is that? Since this year is a ‘pregnant year’ (leap year) on the Hebrew calendar there will be an additional month added and Hanukkah will be a month later.
REMEMBER: COMET ISON WILL BE BEST VIEWED THE EVE OF THANKSGIVING AND THE FIRST DAY OF HANUKKAH!
I like to call Comet ISON, #1-Son! The only time Hanukkah is mentioned in the Bible is in the Gospel of John 10:22, “It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.” (NLT) This is the time when Jesus announced that He was the Good Shepherd and One with Father God. Boldness again got him into trouble. Boldness and courage like the Maccabees and Pilgrims is what we need again. Can anyone shout AMEN?
Is it time again to humble our selves and pray? Is it time to realize that God is our only hope? Yes to both. Romans 13:11 tells us, “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
I almost forgot, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving are also celebrated with food and games. In the United States the games are football games. For the Jews world-wide the game is the Dreydel game, a family activity to pass on the remembrance that “a great miracle happened there”. Everyone wins in the Dreydel game. Maybe Thanksgiving should incorporate a family game of Dreydel and remember that Father God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow! He will still work miracles for us!

There is a somewhat obscure passage in Matt & Luke about the Sign of the son of man like Jonah being in the belly of the whale 3 days and nights , and that being the ONLY sign at the coming of the Lord . Mat 12 40 & 24:30 ff. & Like 11:29

“Cancel the Funeral Comet ISON is back from the dead ” Sounds a whole lot like the sign of the Son of man spoken of in the above scriptures , ONLY Christ as the son of Man could claim of his life ” I lay it down and I take it again ( Jn 10:17,18) then Matt 24 31 adds And He shall send his angels with the great sound of a shofar and they shall gather together His Elect ……
Can we presume this is the sign of the Son of Man ? ( or at least A Sign )

Daniel 3 tells the story again , in words similar to the Dream of Pharaoh in Joseph’s time when He says seven cows are seven times , and the seven loaves are seven times , the dreams are one . But Daniel three speaks of three sons of the Hebrew children who were faithful to their LORD God (YHVH) the result was decreed that they should perish in the fiery furnace which was super heated
Indeed the sun had just cast off a CME and the burst of the super heated Solar wind within the Suns Corona ( Crown) and the early reports according to Spaceweather.com ,
“Prompted reports of the Comets demise” and indeed the coma tail did burn off , but like the STORY OF THE FIERY FURNACE, the three men are three days , so that on the third day on Nov 30 we not only saw the death , but now the RESURRECTION of the Comet .
Luke 11 29 & Mat 12 40 overlayed said of the people shall seek a sign , and there shall no Sign be given it, but the Sign of Jonah ….. The son of Man shall be three days buried in the heart of the earth . Indeed it is an amazing analogy that the Comet fell into the superheated fiery Furnace , and rose up three days later “Clothed” with a bright new Coma ,
Daniel said of the three hebrew children there was not even the smell of fire upon them . How incredible ! though ISON passed thru the corona of the Sun the Solar wind ( a type of the spirit ) it was given a new Tail of life on the third Day .
In John 10 22 We have the Hanukkah story of Christ where it says 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.
24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.
How could the Father testify more clearly of the Son Jesus, than this Hanukkah reviving the LIGHT of the Son, who is the LIGHT OF THE WORLD , Likewise , the Lampstand or Menorrah recently placed in the Cardo in Jerusalem is in its own way also a picture of Christ the Messiah shedding forth His light in our day
There are a host of parallel statements with the analogy through the scriptures consider:
· in Leviticus 6 11 where the priest tending the ashes of the red heifer : he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.
· Likewise the parable of the Prodigal Son where the Father commands the Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, Luk 15 22 Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand,
· 2Ti 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel
· Rev 4:2,3 speaks of the emerald bow ( like the Coma)
· Re 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
· 1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
· :Etc.
When in Genesis god first made light , in verse 14 the Hebrew word for “signs” in the Paleo Hebrew of the ancients the word is Alef vav Tav in pictures literally the “Almighty nailed to the Cross” . In the New testament we have a translated image of this in several places where Christ is called the Alpha and Omega the first and the last , the eternal .
So indeed we are permitted to use these events as signs
The same word for signs is used 77 other places on the Old testament as miraculous signs or tokens portraying the work of the preincarnate Christ .
But a sign is like a trumpet blast a message , a wake up call to turn from sin and prepare in our hearts to herald the Coming of the Son , Like the Children did the week before His crucifiction , Calling out Hosanna or “Save us Now”, a clear reference to Psalm 118: 25,26 Save us now …… blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD
