This is the first Lunar eclipse since August 28, 2007 when secret meetings were being held in Camp David regarding the Temple Mount.

This also is the evening of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and marks the official beginning of winter. The sun is at its lowest in our sky because the North Pole of our tilted planet is pointing away from it.

According to Astronomy.com, this will have the highest Full Moon until 2020.    According to Rob Suggs of Marshall Space Flight Center, “The last time we had a total lunar eclipse on the solstice was in 1638 and the next one will be in 2094.”

The next total Lunar Eclipse will be April 2014, Passover. That will begin the tetrad of blood moons on feast days (Passover 2014, Tabernacles 2014, Passover 2015, Tabernacles 2015) I want to say so much about this, but there is no space in today’s email!!!!!

The eclipse will border the constellations Taurus, Gemini and Orion. (I love the Biblical meanings of these 3 constellations) Remember, how you tell the meaning of the constellation is to go back to the ancient star names (God named the stars, Ps 147:4) from the brightest in the constellation to the least.

TAURUS- ‘the bull’ This is a sign of the bull with his head down, rushing to perce and destroy his enemies with his sharp horns. The Hebew name is Shur, which comes from the root which means both coming and ruling.

  • The bulls eye is Al Debaran (Arabic) which means ‘leader’ or ‘governor’
  • The star in the tip of the horn is El Nath (Arabic) meaning ‘wounded’ or ‘slain’
  • The cluster of the stars at the neck of the bull is known as Pleiades which means congregation of the judge or ruler. This is also called Seven Sisters. Pleiades is found in the Bible in Job 9:9 and 38:31; Amos 5:8. Interesting that the 7 churches of Revelation 2-3 are all found at the base of the Taurus Mountains
  •  Another group of stars on the face of the bull is nown as the Hyades, which means ‘congregated’

GEMINI – ‘the twins’ Here we see Jesus in a manifold two-fold; God and man; suffering and glory; humiliation and triumph

  • One of the twins is holding a club and the other a bow, but they are both at rest, not in action – signifiying a peaceful reign to come, all enemies subdued
  • The Greeks called them Apollo and Hercules
  • The Hebrew name for the constellation is Thaumim, which means ‘united
  • The Latin names for the Twins are Castor and Pollux (see Acts 28:11)
  • The left twin holding the club is Hercules, ‘who cometh to labour or suffer’. The star in his left foot is Al Herah, which means ‘hurt’ or ‘wounded. The star in the center o fthe left twin is Waset, which means ‘set‘ and tells of Him who ‘set his face like flint’ to carry out the Herculean work and when the time was come ‘steadfastly set His face to go’ to complete it
  • The right twin holding the bow and arrow  brightest star in his head is called Apollo and means ‘ruler’ or ‘judge‘. The star in the knee of the twin on the right is called Mebsuto, which means ‘treading under feet.”
  • ORION- ‘the Glorious One’, ‘the Hunter’, ‘the Prince’This shows the Coming One is not a beast, but a triumphant, glorious man and prince
    • This constellations shows Jesus as the Light of this world (John 8:12; 1:4; 9:5)
    • In Hebrew the word is Chiseil, meaning ‘a strong one’, ‘a hero’
    • Amos 5:8, “He made the Pleiades and Orion”
    • The brightest star is in the shoulder and is named Betelgeus, which means ‘the coming of the branch’ (Malachi 3:2)
    • The next brightest star is in the foot and is called Rigel, meaning ‘the foot that crushes’. The foot is lifted up, and placed immediately over the head of the enemy, Lepus, as though in the very act of crushing it
    • The next star is in the left shoulder is called Bellatrix, which means ‘quickly coming’
    • The three in Orion’s belt are called the Three Kings (see Job 38:31)
    • Star in the right leg is Saiph, ‘bruised‘ (see Genesis 3:15)

We will experience the first total lunar eclipse over North America in almost 3 years this next week, the night that begins on December 20. Will this be a bright blood moon or a dark moon (sackcloth)? If depends on things in the atmosphere. If we had volcanic eruptions, the moon would be dark during this eclipse, but most likely this lunar eclipse will be dull red to bright blood red.

When was the last lunar eclipse and what were the headlines? (The following headline information is from Watch.org by Bill Koenig, September 3, 2008)

August 28, 2007: A Blood-Red Moon Rises over North America, Olmert Offers Temple Mount Sovereignty to the Palestinians, Olmert and Abbas Meet on Israel’s Land and Jerusalem, Bush Says Iran’s Actions Could Lead to a Shadow of a Nuclear Holocaust, and Bush Arrives in New Orleans for his 15th Post-Katrina Visit.

Another total lunar eclipse/”blood-red” moon occurred on July 16, 2000, while U.S. President Bill Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Yasser Arafat were at the Middle East Summit at Camp David. The sticking point that caused the summit to fail had to do with who would have sovereignty over the Temple Mount-The Israeli’s or the Palestinian Arabs.

A lunar (moon) can only occur during a full moon, always the middle of a Hebrew month. A solar (sun) eclipse can only happen at the end or beginning of a Hebrew month.  If you don’t have a Jewish calendar, you can always tell what time of the month it is by the moon. A sliver of the moon shows the beginning or ending of the Hebrew month while a full moon is the middle of the month. In order for an eclipse to fit into Biblical prophecy it must fall on a Feast of the Lord or a Holy Day

When the signs are in the heavenlies over God’s appointed festivals (Feasts of the Lord) it is calling us to attention, watch. Luke 2:25, “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; (28) Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” (Also Daniel 6:26-27; Joel 2:31; Isaiah 34:2-5) [my comment- look up, WATCH the heavenly signs]

What do Rabbinical historical records show us regarding eclipses:

  • R. Meir said, “Whenever the luminaries are in eclipse, it is a bad omen for Israel since they are inured to blows. This may be compared to a school teacher who comes to school with a strap in his hand. Who becomes apprehensive? He who is accustomed to be daily punished. Our Rabbis taught, ‘When the sun is in eclipse it is a bad omen for idolaters; when Lavanah (Moon) is in eclipse, it is a bad omen for Israel, since Israel reckons by Lavanah (Moon) and idolaters by the sun. If it is in eclipse in the east, it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the east; if in the west, it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the west, if in the midst of heaven it is bad omen for the whole world. If its face is red as blood, [it is a sign that] the sword is coming to the world; if it is like sack-cloth, the arrows of famine are coming to the world; if it resembles both, the sword and the arrows of famine are coming to the world. If the eclipse is at sunset calamity will tarry in its coming; if at dawn, it hastens on its way, but some say the order is to be reversed. And there is no nation which is smitten that its G-ds are not smitten together with it, as it is said, And against all the G-ds of Egypt I will execute judgments. But when Israel fulfill the will of the Omnipresent, they need have no fear of all these [omens] as it is said, Thus saith the L-RD, ‘Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the nation are dismayed at them, the idolaters will be dismayed, but Israel will not be dismayed.” (Talmud-Mas. Sukkah 29a)

As the shepherds, we should be ‘watching’ by night also. Mark 13:33, “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.”

Today (12/17/10) is the 10th of Tevet  on the Hebrew calendar. The 8th, 9th and 10th of Tevet have great historical significance and all of these 3 dates are dates remembered with fasting.

On the 8th of Tevet 132 BC,  the Greek King Ptolemy II had 72 (6 from each of the 12 Tribes) translate the Torah into Greek. It became know as the Septuagint. Following the translation from Hebrew to Greek, there was 3 days of total darkness over the land (Tevet 8-10). It is believed that the darkness was due to the fact that the Torah would no longer be treated with great reverance and holiness, but with the Greek mindset that everything had to be reasoned out and understood mentally. At this time the Holy Torah was downgraded, from the supernatural (spiritual) to the natural (mental).

On the 9th of Tevet, 4th Century BC, Ezra the scribe died. He was the founder of the Great Assembly, a body of 120 prophets and sages who established important matters like the standard text found in Jewish prayer books today.

On the 10th of Tevet, 587 BC, Babylonia King Nebuchadnezzar began his siege of Jerusalem. Actually, there was little damage on that first day and no Jews were killed, yet it began a chain of disasters which ended with the destruction of the Holy Temple seven months later on the 9th of Av. The 10th of Tevet is still observed today by Jews as a public fast day, as mentioned by the prophet Zechariah (8:19).

This is a time to draw close to God, to humble ourselves before Him and bring back the holy fear of God into our lives.

Hanukkah / Chanukah

Posted: December 1, 2010 in Holidays- Holy Days

Tonight at sundown begins the 8 day Hebrew festival of Hanukkah. It is also spelled Chanukah, or called the Festival of Lights or Feast or Dedication. The word Hanukkah itself means “re-dedication“. This festival is always from Kislev 25 to Tevet 2 on the Hebrew calendar, but on the calendar we use in our everyday lives it falls on different Gregorian calendar days. This is the only holiday (holy day) that covers 2 months.

John 10:22, “And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.”  The NLT Bible reads “It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah”

In John 8:12 & 9:5 Jesus says that He is the light of this world. In Matthew 5:14 Jesus says that we are to be the light of this world. We can only be the light of this world by reflecting the true Light of Jesus. As we behold the glory of His face, we will shine in this world’s present darkness.

This is not one of the 7 Feasts of the Lord, but a memorial holiday. They remember the miracle that happened and to celebrate the miracle and provision on that first Hanukkah in 167 BC. The holy temple of God had been defiled, to the extent that a pig was sacrificed on the holy altar of God by the successors of Alexander the Great. Judah Maccabee (The Hammer) organized a revolt and they succeeded in getting back the Holy Temple of God. The problem, cleaning up the unholiness and bringing back holiness into the Temple. There was only enough holy oil for the Menorah to light the Temple for 1 day and it took 8 days for the procedure to make the oil holy. A miracle happened when 1 day’s supply of oil lasted 8 days. On the 8th day they celebrated the miracle and from then until now, they celebrate and remember the miracles of God.

This holiday (holy day) reminds us:

  • God’s miraculous provision– God never changes and Jesus who is the same yesterday, today and forever is still doing miracles
  • The defeat of our enemy, both spiritual and physical- we are to have an expectation of overcoming
  • Dedication to God on a national level– expect God’s Light to awaken the Church, expect a Great Awakening on a national level
  • Jesus is the true Light of this world – ” Let there be light ! ” Bring out the beauty and truth of Jesus to a hurting world.
  • We are called to be light, but we must be light as He is Light and reflect the glory we find in our quiet times with Him.
  • As the Temples of God (1 Corinthians 3:16 & 6:19) we need to rededicate our bodies back to God. As we walk in this dark world it is easy to pick up the unholy habits and mindsets. Especially in these days prior to Christmas.
  • Remember– call back to your memory how God has miraculously provided. Be thankful and praise Him, as you draw near to Him – He will draw near to you.

Greetings! This is the day the Lord has made for us and we have been blessed with expanded time today- 1 more hour! The Hebrew month of Kislev begins tonight. I hope you are ministered to as I share what I have learned regarding this month in God’s yearly cycle.

Every Hebrew month has a Tribe, Constellation and Hebrew letter associated with it. These hold keys to our promises for that month and help us to pray in line with God’s timing and to get our lives into time with His specific appointed times.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 tells us ‘to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven’. Ecclesiastes 3:15 reads, ‘That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been; and God requires an account of what is past.’ From these verses we get an understanding of cycles and how history repeats itself. Just as our ‘seasons’ repeat themselves naturally (ie, Gulf experiencing hurricane season), things spiritually repeat themselves and we can learn from history. Not superstitously, but seeking God in specific times.

Kislev is known as the ‘ninth monthaccording to the sacred calendar and is the ‘third month’on the civil calendar. Cheshvan and Kislev are either 29 or 30 days in length, and this year both have 30. Kislev is a Babylonian name means ‘ his confidence, trust, security’. The theme of the month has become to be known as ‘Restful Sleep’ and a ‘Month of Dreams’.

Month of Dreams is what is has become known for because the days are shorter and the nights are longer. Also, there are 10 dreams listed in Genesis. Every Shabbat has a Torah reading and 9 of the 10 dreams of Genesis are read in the month of Kislev through the Shabbat Torah readings.

The first mention of this month is found in Nehemiah 1:1, “ The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu (Kislev) , in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace”. No specific date is mentioned.

The Hebrew month of Kislev begins this year November 7, 2010 at sundown and ends December 7, 2010 at sundown on our solar calendar.

TRIBE- BENJAMIN, Genesis 36:16-20. Benjamin is the last son of Jacob and the second son of Rachel. Rachel died after Benjamin was born and called him Benoni, ‘son of my sorrows’, but Jacob changed the name to ‘son of my right hand’. This is the only son Jacob named and the only son born after he left Laban. He was born at Beth-el (House of God) where Jacob had the night vision of the ladder 22 years before (Gen 28:12).

Benjamin’s symbol is a ‘Wolf’. Genesis 49:27, “Benjamin shall ravin [as] a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.” This shows the 2 stages of Benjamin. The first is shown in King Saul: Early stages of his life, he shall devour his prey, savagely and not share- he will turn on you if you try to take his prey- spirit of wanting for himself at all costs. The second stage is shown in Saul who became Apostle Paul: An older, more mature wolf will be willing to make sacrifices and give out good things which God has given him; whole nature has changed.

Watch for the weakness of Benjamin this month: He was spoiled by everyone. (1) His brothers never treated him as they treated Joseph (2) Reuben was willing to promise his 2 sons as promise to protect Benjamin (3) Judah offered to go to prison instead of Benjamin (4) Daddy’s boy (5) Given 5 times or food and 5 times more clothing (raiment) than his brothers (6) Tried for the first time at age 33 when he was taken to Egypt and was accused by Joseph of stealing his cup (Gen 44:12) (7) Judges 19-21 show the sexual weakness of Benjamin when they fell into homosexuality

Benjamin can be a picture of the Grace given to the Church. The Church was born outside the Law, very spoiled not having to ‘earn’ what has been given them, and weakness of the flesh has been a problem. Queen Esther was from the lineage of Benjamin and we see her as the interceeding one for such a time as this.

CONSTELLATION/MAZAL- SAGGITTARIUS‘The Archer’, telling the story of Jesus in His dual nature of Son of God and Son of Man, ‘Conquering and to conguer’ (Revelation 6:2) Saggittarius is a Latin name, the Hebrew name for this constellation is Kesith, which means ‘the Archer’. Hale Bopp Comet was first discovered in the bow of Saggittarius.

LETTER- SAMACH, the 15th letter in the Hebrew Aleph-Bet with the numerical value of 60. The pictograph is a prop and symbolizes  (1) support  (2) a slow twisting (like a plant being changed by a prop) (3) turning aside (like the plant). It is also a letter meaning shield and reveals to us God’s encompassing support since this letter is a closed letter. In Hebrew cursive it looks like an ‘O’. In Psalm 119:113-120, the 8 verses tell us of how God supports and upholds those who lean completely, not double minded (113) on His law.

SPECIAL DATES IN KISLEV:

  • Kislev 4,  Zechariah 7:1 – And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Kislev [they asked the Lord if they should fast and weep this month, and the Lord showed them it was better to obey than to fast, since they ended up fasting for themselves and not God]
  • Kislev 6, In 1958, Jerusalem inaugurated a new water reservoir, thus assuring the holy city of an adequate water supply for the first time in its 3,000-year history. Jerusalem’s shortage of water was long its weakness in time of military siege. Back in the days of King David, a tunnel had been dug from the Old City to a neighboring valley, to channel water inside the Old City Walls. In modern times, the problem was exacerbated in 1948 when the Arab blockade of Jerusalem left its residents without a water supply.
  • Kislev 7, In 440 BCE, 18 years prior to the destruction of the First Temple, King Yehoyakim burned a scroll containing the biblical Book of Lamentations, as recorded in the Book of Jeremiah (ch. 36). The idea of a Jewish king taking such an un-Jewish approach was viewed by the community as a great tragedy, and this date was proclaimed as a fast day. The prophet Jeremiah later re-wrote the scroll
  • Kislev 14, Traditional birthday of Reuben, first son of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 29:32)
  • Kislev 19, In the fall of 1798, Rabbi Schneur Zalman was arrested on charges that his teachings and activities threatened the imperial authority of the Czar, and was imprisoned in an island fortress in the Neva River in Petersburg. In his interrogations, he was compelled to present to the Czar’s ministers the basic tenets of Judaism and explain various points of Chassidic philosophy and practice. After 53 days, he was exonerated of all charges and released on Kislev 19. The 19th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev is celebrated as the “Rosh Hashanah of Chassidism.”
  • Kislev 24 at sundown (12/1/10) Chanukah Day 1 begins (Kislev  25) & ends Tevet 2 (12/9/10)
  • Kislev 29, In 1914, Jews of Tel Aviv were expelled by the Turkish authorities and sent to Egypt. Just three years later, the Turks would order the remaining 9,000 Jews out of Jaffa, in advance of the British military offensive. The Jews fled north, where they suffered from disease and starvation. They were allowed to return with the British ousting of the Turks in 1917

This year there will be Leonid Meteor Showers Kislev 10 (11/17/10).

Kristallnacht 72 Years Later

Posted: October 25, 2010 in Hebrew Months

Kristallnacht is a German word meaning, Kristall (crystal, glass) nacht (night). It is also known as ‘The Night of the Broken Glass“. It was the night of the planned Nazi attack to destroy the property of the Jews, nationwide. In this one night of terror, 1,250 synagogues were burnt to the ground or destroyed; overe 91 Jews were killed;  30,000 Jews were thrown into concentration camps; 7,000 Jewish businesses were destroyed; and thousands of Jewish homes were ransacked.  This night was November 9, 1938. On the Hebrew calendar it was Cheshvan 15, 5799. This year it fell on October 23, 2010.

Below are photos of a burned out synagogue in Berlin and headlines from the NY Times.

So, has it changed much? Are God’s covenant people loved or hated in the world today? Here is a report I just got in from Jerusalem, reported by Jerry Golden of The Golden Report:

Jews in Europe Entering a New Dark Period   Israel National News   Oct 19th

The European Jewish Congress warns that a recent wave of anti-Semitism, some of which was officially sanctioned, has left Jewish communities in grave danger.  EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor sums up: “We are entering a very dark period for Jews in Europe.” Recent instances of official anti-Semitism, of which there have been a number, include an event that occurred in Antwerp, Belgium.  A respected government-funded Catholic school hosted a “Palestine Day,” replete with anti-Semitic references and activities for youngsters.  One stall at the event was entitled “Throw the soldiers into the sea,” and children were invited to throw replicas of Israeli soldiers into two large tanks of water.  Last weekend, an event organized for Jewish children in Malmo, Sweden, was attacked by a gang of thugs who shouted “Heil Hitler” and “Jewish pigs.” The gang entered the site of the event and damaged property. The EJC has called on European governments and the EU to launch a campaign against intolerance and anti-Semitism.
In England, France and the Netherlands Jews are now afraid to let their Jewish identity be known in public. Jewish men are wearing hats instead of their Kippots (Yarmulkes) in an attempt not to be attacked on the streets by Islamics and neo-Nazis.

It is easy for us to look back at the Holocaust and ask ‘why didn’t people do something’?  Let me ask you, What are you doing? Are you speaking up? Are you being heard? Bad things happen when good men do nothing.

For Zion’s sake I will not be silent,

Mary

  1. Deuteronomy 4 shows us the Ten Commandments, things that separate us from the rest of the world, ways of living that pleases God
  2. Leviticus 27:30 & 32 shows us that the Tithe (tenth of your finances, goods received or earned) belongs to the LORD, separated for Him
  3. Daniel 1 shows us that Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego separated themselves from the ways of the world for Ten Days and at the end of Ten Days they were Ten times wiser
  4. Matthew 25:1, the Kingdom of Heaven is likened to the Ten Virgins that had separated themselves for the Bride Groom (all called to be 10’s, but not all ended up being 10’s)
  5. Matthew 4 we see Jesus fasting 40 days (4 x 10) Fasting is separating yourself to be closer to God
  6. Jude 14 tells us of Jesus coming with Ten Thousand of the saints of God, those who had separated & consecrated themselves to live a life for God, will come and judge what is unholy, unrighteous (warning is in Luke 21:34-36)

The above examples are from a teaching of Benny Thomas (www.bennythomas.org) who was our pastor during our years in Bible School and continues to be one of our good friends in the ministry.

EW Bullinger wrote in his book Numbers In Scripture, “…ten is one of the perfect numbers, and signifies the perfection of Divine order, commencing, as it does, an altogether new series of numbers. Completeness of order, marking the entire round of anything, is, therefore, the ever-present signification of the number ten. It implies that nothing is wanting; that the number and order are perfect; that the whole cycle is complete.”

  • Noah was the 10th generation from Adam (this week’s Torah & Haftarah are regarding Noah)
  • Ten Commandments
  • Tithe
  • The Redemption Money
  • Lord’s Prayer- 10 clauses
  • Ten Plagues
  • Ten Nations
  • Abraham’s faith tested by 10 trials
  • The 10 rebellions in the Wilderness
  • The 10 x 10 Silver Sockets which formed the foundation of the Tabernacle
  • Ten times fire came down from heaven (6 were in judgment, 6 represents man)
  • Ten times people shouted for joy
  • Ten virgins
  • Ten “I Am’s in John said by Jesus
  • In the Talmud there are 10 different words used for idols; 10 different words for joy; ten generations from Adam to Noah & Noah to Abraham

In some way, make this day different, separated, holy to God. I had a dream last night regarding 2 churches, one so dead we left it on Sunday morning and went to another church that was having such financial hardships they were using the Sunday School rooms to sell garage sale items while church was going on. Neither was “seeking first the Kingdom of God.” SELAH

Cheshvan is the eighth of the twelve months on the Jewish “lunar” sacred calendar and second in the civil calendar. This month has 29 days, sometimes 30. In a “complete” year (shlemah year), which has 355 or 385 days long, both Cheshvan and Kislev have 30 days.  This year Cheshvan has 30 days.  This year it begins at sundown October 8th to sundown November 7, 2010.

Cheshvan (hesvan) is call the month of bool, a name that stems from the word for “flood”. The flood began on the 17th of Cheshvan, and ended the following year on the 27th of Cheshvan. On the following day, the 28th of Cheshvan, Noah brought his sacrifice to God and God swore never again to bring a flood upon the earth to destroy all mankind, and then revealed the sign of His covenant with the world, the rainbow. For this reason, it is called “MarCheshvan” or ‘bitter Cheshvan’.

I Kings 6:38 calls this month Bul. “And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which [is] the eighth month” Bul means ‘increase, produce’ from the root meaning ‘rain, showers’, referring to this being a month of showers.

Kristallnacht, the Night of the Broken Glass of 1938, falls on the 15th of Cheshvan (October 23, 2010). This commemorates when the Nazis youth gangs roamed through Jewish neighborhoods breaking windows of business and homes and burning synagogues. The began the violence against the Jewish people in Germany. 75,000 businesses were destroyed, 26,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps for defending themselves & property. 91 Jews died and this began the Holocaust.

Cheshvan is the only month which has no holidays or special mitzvot. It is taught that it is “reserved” for the time of the Messiah, who will inaugurate the third Temple in Cheshvan. This is known as the most drab and colorless month of the year. This month falls after Tishri, with the Feasts of Trumpets, Day of Atonement and Tabernacles. Cheshvan cannot compare to the brilliance of the Falls Feasts. This is another reason it is called ‘bitter Cheshvan’.

Letter- nun, (noon) the 14th letter in the Aleph-Bet and has a numerical value of 50 (representing freedom and fullness of life). The pictograph of this letter is a fish and in ancient symbols it is seen as a fish darting through water. Nun is also seen as a sprout of vegetation. Both of these pictographs denote action and life. The word “please” is made up of the letter aleph & nun, aleph representing an ox and nun representing action. Asking please is an “sign of strength”.

Mazal : “Akrav” (Scorpio- the Scorpion) The Hebrew root for Scorpio means “a deadly foe” or “to cleave in conflict“.  In the story of Jesus in the heavenly constellations, the stars from brightest first tell the story of  “The serpent seeking to wound, but itself trodden under foot.”

Tribe: Manasseh, first born son of Joseph when he was in rulership under Pharaoh in Egypt. Manasseh’s name means “one who makes me forget”. Manasseh’s weakness was he wanted everything ‘right now’. His strength was the ability to forget and not hold grudges, loyal and would not bend under pressure.

Notable Dates in Cheshvan

  • 7– “Deliver Dew and Rain” prayers are added for rain in Israel
  • 11– Jewish Mother’s Day commemorating the death of Rachel, wife of Jacob (Israel)
  • 12– Assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1955), not a national memorial day
  • 15– Kristallnacht, Night of the Broken Glass 1938
  • 17– If no rain has fallen yet in the month, special prayers are prayed this day for rain
  • 17– Great flood began 1656 (2105 BC) and Noah and his family were the only survivors
  • 17– 960 BC Solomon’s Temple completed, but dedicated the following year in Tishri, the month of Isaac’s birth. This month  is believed to be the future dedication of the Third Temple
  • 18– 1990, Assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane, Jewish leader, founder of the American Jewish Defense League and former Knesset member, was assassinated in New York by an Egyptian terrorist
  • 23– 127 BC, according to Talmudic tradition, this was the date the stone of the altar was defiled by the Greeks and removed from the Holy Temple
  • 27– 2104 BC, in the Jewish year 1657 the ‘earth dried’ (Genesis 8:14) after the great flood of Noah’s family 365 days on the Ark. On this day, God is said to have commanded Noah to “Come out of the ark” and repopulate, settle and civilize the earth.

The Jewish people have followed a Bible reading program since Ezra & Nehemiah’s days. These reading are the same world-wide and which unifiesall the Jews to God’s plan for thier lives each week.

On Tishri 22 (September 30, 2010 on the solar calendar this year) the Torah reading schedule will end and will begin the annual cycle on the next Shabbat, which is Tishri 24 (October 2) this year. The reading October 2 will go back to B’resheet (“In the beginning”), which is the first book we know as Genesis.

The Torah (first 5 books of the Bible, Books of Moses) is broken into 54 readings that are sung or read in each of the sysnagogues each year. This accounts for adding a leap month each year, which will happen this year. Non leap years double up readings on some Shabbat services.

The Haftarah (‘concluding portion’) is a short reading from the Prophets that will have some relation to the Torah portion.

Shimchat Atzeret (Eighth Day Assembly) the readings will be:

  • Torah: Shimchat Torah (“Joy in the Torah”), Deuteronomy 33:1-34; Genesis 1:1 – 2:3; Numbers 29:35- 30:1
  • Haftarah: Joshua 1:1-18
  • Suggested NT: Romans 7:21-25

Psalm 119:105, “Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Leviticus 23:36, “Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it [is] a solemn assembly; [and] ye shall do no servile work [therein].”
Shemini Atzeret means “The Assembly of the Eighth (Day); Shemini, #8066 (shem-ee-nee) means eight; Atzeret, #6116 (ats-aw-raw) means an assembly”. Rabbinic Literature says that God came to tabernacle with His people for 7 days and had such a good time He decided to stay for another day.
John 1:14,  “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” The Greek word for dwelt is skenoo, and means ‘to fix one’s tabernacle, have one’s tabernacle, abide (or live) in a tabernacle (or tent), tabernacle’. Jesus, being the express image of God, loved us so much that He came to Tabernacle among us and make a way to be with Him throughout eternity. Jesus is the Word made flesh. The Eight Day Assembly is all about ‘dancing with the Word’.  There is a wonderful song called “DANCE WITH ME O LOVER OF MY SOUL.” It is a beautiful song of Ruth and Boaz, and we can see the story of our Messiah & the Bride of Christ.

Josephus records in Antiquities, 3.10.4.24, “On the eighth day all work was laid aside…..”  Even though this is the Eighth day of the assembly, it is a seperate holy day in itself. They do not take the lulav & etrog on Shemini Atzeret

This is the time of the “Rejoicing of the Torah” Today they give a sacrifice of praise! They rejoice in the Lord and dance with the Torah!

In synagogues around the world, men will be dancing carrying the Torah Scrolls, children will be carrying toy scrolls. There will be much rejoicing and merriment as they worship God with their praise & thanksgiving for the Holy Word.

Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

  • The people were destroyed when they had a lack of knowledge of God’s way of doing and being right
  • Deuteronomy 31:10-12, hear, learn, do all the words of the Torah (law, teaching)
  • Micah 4:2, “And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
  • Read Nehemiah 8:1-3, 8, 13-15, 18

Torah, #H8451 (to-rah) from #H3384, (yaw-raw), a prime root meaning “to flow as water, to rain; to point out (as if by aiming the finger), to teach. The Torah refers to the Books of Moses, the first 5 books of the Old Testament written by Moses during the Wilderness years.

Water is compared to the Torah, which descends from a high place to a low place bringing life, refreshing, blessing.

  • Ezekiel 34:26, cause rain to come down in his season, showers of blessing
  • Psalm 72:6-8, He shall come down like rain on mown grass, like showers that water the earth
  • Habbakkuk 2:14, “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”

In Mark 4 & Matthew 13 the parable of Jesus teaching about the ‘sower and the seed’ is recorded. Matthew 13:19 reads, “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.”

May you rejoice in the Living Word as He teaches you and gives you understanding. Shalom
