Remember, 4:16 was a major transition, “Awake O North Wind”

Song 5:2, “I sleep, but my heart is awake; it is the voice of my beloved! He knocks, saying, “Open for me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; for my head is covered with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”

  • In this, Jesus is revealing Himself to her in a night season, inviting her to “fellowship in His sufferings’ (Phil 3:10)
    • In verses 3-5 she responds in obedience which will be followed by a test in verses 6-7.
  • I Sleep – she is now at rest, no longer battling the flesh for decisions and compromise.
  • He is knocking at the door of her heart to come to a new level
    • Night represents darkness, hard times to see things
    • Opening a door speaks of a level of communion (Rev 3:20)
    • Drops of the night – now she will fellowship with Jesus suffering
  • He is describing his relationship with her, leaving out “spouse
    • My sister: identification, same life; sharing in the sufferings
    • My love: he reminds her of his tender love
    • My dove: he speaks of her singleness and loyalty
    • My perfect one: undefiled; he sees her ‘intentions’ as perfect, mature

Songs 5:3, “I have taken off my robe; how can I put it on again? I have washed my feet; how can I defile them?”

I think most people see this as if she is refusing to get up and answer the door. But she calls him her ‘beloved’, responding in love and obedience (vs 4).

  • Robe – she has taken off the worldly ways, and is now clothed in robes of righteousness – she is refusing compromise.
  • Feet – her walk is now a walk of faith and she will not turn back

Songs 5:4, “My beloved put his hand by the latch of the door, and my heart yearned for him.”

He is now helping her to open her heart in full obedience

  • Lock – thoughts and emotions that block our heart and keep her from full obedience
  • Heart – me’ah, belly, inward parts, emotions
  • Yearned – hamah, roar, cry aloud, mourn, be moved, growl, stirred

Songs 5:5, “I arose to open for my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the lock.”

This speaks of the abundant life with the Holy Spirit.

  • Myrrh – her decision to die to self
    • His hands were dripping with myrrh ‘like liquid’ on the lock of her heart
    • This will be preparing for the 2 tests that come in verses 6-7
  • Fingers – activity, actions of working faith
  • Handles on the lock – thoughts and emotions

Test 1 (He allowed the test) Songs 5:6, “I opened for my beloved, but my beloved had turned away and was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.”

  • Now she will have to walk totally by faith, without him – Will she totally trust by faith?
    • The first time he withdrew himself was because of her fear, insecurity
    • Now he will withdraw to strengthen her
  • Her greatest desire is his presence
    • We are assured that Jesus will never forsake us (Heb 13:5), but there is a difference between walking by faith and experiencing His presence.

Test 2 – Songs 5:7, “The watchmen who went about the city found me. They struck me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took my veil away from me.”

  • Will she quit under pressure and the bait of satan? (skandalon, offence)
    • She is suffering abuse under those who were supposed to feed and protect her
  • Watchmen, keepers – leaders, spiritual authority that guard the people of God
    • Wounded in the house of friends (Ps 55:12-21)
  • Took my veil away – exposed secret things. Now she cannot function in the Body, no covering, no place to minister
    • They will broadcast her failures and she will face shame again

 

 

This will be the last day of year 5779 on the Hebraic calendar. Tonight at sundown it will be 5780, Adam’s birthday. The calendar year begins with the 6th day of Creation. Sundown tonight begins Rosh HaShanah, the Head (rosh) of the Year (shanah). It is also called Yom Teruah (blowing of Trumpets- Lev 23:23-25), Feast of Trumpets, The Time of Jacob’s Trouble, Day of Remembrance, The Day of the Awakening Blast, Yom HaDin (Day of Judgment), The Opening of the Books, The Opening of the Gates, Yom HaKeseh (the Hidden Day).

My favorite name is Ha Kiddushin/Nesuin (Wedding of the Messiah). Joel 2:15-16, ….let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. (chuppah – khoop-paw’). This fits so perfect with our 40 day devotions of Song of Songs.

This is the 5th of the 7 Feasts of the LORD listed in Leviticus 23. Jesus has fulfilled Passover (Jesus is our Passover Lamb), Unleavened Bread (Jesus who knew no sin,  became sin for us), Firsts Fruits (Jesus was first raised from the dead), Pentecost (Acts 2, Church began), but the last 3 have not been fulfilled. They will in the last of the Last Days and Tribulation. These are Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles. All the first 4 were fulfilled on the very day that they had been following since the Wilderness journey from Exodus.

For all of the other 7 Feasts (moedim, fixed appointed times on God’s prophetic calendar), there is a historical significance, such as the First Passover in Egypt. The Feast of Trumpets is the only Feast that has no historical record, all is looking forward.

Matthew 24:36 (NLT) reads, ““However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.” This is wordage from the Feast of Trumpets and why this is a 2 day Feast. There had to be 2 witnesses that looked for the first sliver of the moon, and then they would light fires from mountain to mountain, or blow shofars from the mountain tops all over Israel, announcing the new year has begun. We may not know the ‘day or the hour’, but we should not be ignorant of the SEASON.

The greeting for these 2 days is “Shana Tova”, Happy New Year!!! Traditional food is to serve apples dipped in honey, and say “may you have a sweet New Year”.

We use many idioms in our nation that others would never understand. Like, “fork in the road”. Now you are going to see the Beloved idioms from the farming community, that would speak real to her. Just as Jesus would speak to the fishermen about fishing and the farmers about planting seeds.

Song 4:13, “Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with pleasant fruits, fragrant henna with spikenard,”

  • An orchard is to feed others. This describes her fruitfulness
  • Pomegranates – seeds, abundance of fruit. This speaks of the fruit of the Spirit
  • Henna, kaphor, price of life, ransom, pitch or henna plant

Song 4:14, “Spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices—”

  • Narda spike of a nard, a very expensive plant from India used for costly perfume
  • Saffron – orange-yellow flower used for flavoring in drinks and confections to promote perspiration for cooling the body
  • Calmus – reed grown by marshes that have a sweet smelling fragrance
  • Frankincense – incense used in prayers offered to God
  • Myrrh – Arabian gum from the bard of a tree, used for sacred oil and embalming
  • Aloes – fragrant Indian tree, used for perfumes
  • Chief spices – from the balsam tree, sweet smelling perfume

I think the Passion Translations lays out vs 13-14 beautifully: “Your inward life is now sprouting, bringing forth fruit. What a beautiful paradise unfolds within you.When I’m near you, I smell aromas of the finest spice, for many clusters of my exquisite fruit now grow within your inner garden. Here are the nine: pomegranates of passion, henna from heaven, spikenard so sweet, saffron shining, fragrant calamus from the cross, sacred cinnamon, branches of scented woods, myrrh, like tears from a tree, and aloe as eagles ascending.”

Song 4:15, “A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.”

  • The Bride has 3 sources of water
    • Ps 1:3, blessed hearts are like a tree planted by the water
    • Is 1:30, hardened hearts are hard from being dry
  • Three ways the Holy Spirit ministers to us
    • Fountain – hidden source of water from below surface
      • Gardens, plural – enough for us and others
    • Well – stored water to draw as needed
    • Streams – outward flow of water, coming from the high places, refreshing

Now the Maiden replies to His words of love, respect and admiration:

Song 4:16, “Awake, O north wind, and come, O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.”

  • THIS IS THE TURNING POINT OF THE WHOLE BOOK!!!
    • Where she shifts from only thinking of what Jesus can do for her, but now she wants to be part of His plan, she wants to be devoted to Him alone.
  • North Winds – tough times, times of challenge to bring us to a new place in Him
    • Challenge is to keep our face to Him in the North Wind
  • South Winds – winds of refreshing, winds that bring us blessings
    • The problem with the south winds is sleep and comfort
  • Blow upon my gardens – my heart and my ministry to be deeply affected
    • Deeply affected, pressed to bring out true fragrance

Now the Beloved sees she has allowed her heart to become His garden. She is no longer just concerned about her inheritance in Him, now it is His inheritance in her.

Song 5:1, I have come to my garden, my sister, my spouse; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. (To His FriendsEat, O friends! Drink, yes, drink deeply, O beloved ones!

  • 9 times He says “My” to depict His ownership in Song 5:1 and 6 times in verse 2.

Song 4:9, “You have ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; you have ravished my heart with one look of your eyes, with one link of your necklace.”

WOW! This is how Jesus feels about us! Mike Bickle says this is a high point for Jesus in the Song of Songs.

  • Ravished– to be filled with emotions of joy or delight because of one who is unusually attractive (Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary)
  • My sister, my spouse (4:8, 9, 10, 11, 12; 5:1, 2) This is equally yoked by blood and by law, like Abram and Sarai.
    • My sister – from Jesus as the Son of Man
    • My spouse – from Jesus as the Son of God
  • Look of the eyes – looking up in devotion, ‘lift up your eyes’ means ‘spiritually’
  • Necklace – the neck speaks of our will
    • Links speak of each time we willingly obey
    • Prov 1:8 (CJB) My son, heed the discipline of your father, and do not abandon the teaching of your mother; (9) they will be a garland to grace your head, a medal of honor for your neck.”

Song 4:10, “How fair is your love, my sister, my spouse! How much better than wine is your love, and the scent of your perfumes than all spices!”

  • Wine speaks of what exhilarates the heart. Think about this, our love for Jesus exhilarate His heart!
  • Perfume is called ointment, invisible. Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and the affect of the Spirit’s anointing on us excites Jesus!
  • The scent of perfume is our inner life. The scent is in the inside and comes out from crushing. (2 Cor 2:14-15)
    • Spices refer to what is bought with a great price
    • Spices came through merchants from other countries

Song 4:11, “Your lips, O my spouse, drip as the honeycomb; honey and milk are under your tongue; and the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.”

  • Lips refer to our speech
    • No idle words, no course jesting
  • Honey is sweet and used for healing. Honey takes time to develop (gathering, preparing, storing).
  • Watchman Nee, “From the mouth of the maiden issue forth sweet and refreshing words, not gossip, jokes, or rash words. Her words are not outbursts of torrents, but drops of honey from the honeycomb. This is the slowest kind of dripping.”
  • Under the tongue is where food is stored, the top of the tongue is where it is eaten.
    • Honey is stored for the weak ones
    • Milk is stored for the new babes in Christ
  • Garments speak of her outward conduct, what is seen, like our attitude, behavior, manners.
    • Lebanon was known for the beautiful fragrance

Song 4:12, “A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.”

  • Enclosed Garden, not open to the public; expensive to maintain; locked from compromise” (“A” garden, singular)
    • Now the Beloved can find refreshing and pleasure in her garden, heart, ministry; only for His pleasure. Holiness – separated for Him alone!
  • Watchman Nee, “A garden is not ordinary ground; it is not for ordinary planting. Nor is it a field, which is fit for tilling. It is specially designed for beauty and enjoyment. It can contain trees, but for the purpose of the trees is not for the wood. It can have fruit, but its goal is not the fruit. Its attention is on the flowers; the flowers are for beauty and for pleasing the eyes.”
  • Spring shut up – undefiled, pure water, purity
  • Fountain sealed – not public fountain where people would bath, not available for animals to defile.

 

Song 4:6, “Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense.” (Maiden speaking)

She responds now that she is willing to go, no matter the cost. She is now willing and obedient.

  • Mountains are obstacles that hinder her obedience.
    • Hills are smaller obstacles, like little foxes, distractions
  • Shadows are
  • Myrrh is a burial spice, but has an amazing fragrance. It speaks of a burial spice to our flesh and a fragrance to our spirit.
    • The mountain of Myrrh is definitely not for comfort, it will be a sacrifice of her flesh. We have to take up our cross and deny ourselves on this mountain
  • Frankincense speaks of prayer in the East. (Ps 141:2; Rev 5:8)
    • She will have to go up the hill of prayer to receive the supernatural strength to go up the mountain of Myrrh, to die to the flesh. Our prayer life empowers us to climb the hill of self denial.
  • Shadows speak of areas of weakness and insecurities that hinder us in our walk of faith
  • MY WAY?  Really? There is still more to be done.  That is, unless she was saying I am not going to do like everyone else, I want the path You have chosen for me Lord.

Now the Beloved calls her ‘beautiful’, 1 of the 13 times in this book.

Song 4:7, “You are ALL fair, my love, and there is no spot in you.” 

  • ALL fair, ‘altogether beautiful’. This is the first time it is used in this book. She is being commended and honored for her obedience.
  • No Spot – because He sees her heart. She still has shadows of weaknesses, but He is looking at her willing heart.
  • Matthew Henry comments, “The spiritual sacrifices must be without blemish. There is no spot but such as is often the spot of God’s children, none of the leopard’s spots. The church, when Christ shall present it to himself a glorious church, will be altogether without spot and wrinkle.”

Song 4:8, “Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon. Look from the top of Amana, from the top of Senir and Hermon, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.”

  • This is the first time that He has referred to her as ‘my spouse’. She is now serving out of love from her heart.
  • Lebanon is full of fragrance and flowing rivers, symbolizing rest. First she is invited to ‘arise’ and now the invitation is ‘to follow’ him to the mountaintops.(‘tops’)
    • 3 mountaintops -speaking of looking down from your seated position
  • The three mountain tops below are from Watchman Nee’s commentary.
  • “Amana” means truth. We can look down from this peak. We can dwell on the peak of all the real things in Christ.
    • Amana means ‘fixed’, sure, covenant, position, a certain position
  • “Shenir” means a soft armor, which signifies the armor given to us by the Holy Spirit. The thought in this verse is totally related to warfare. We often need to consider the things down below with a full view of the heavenly warfare.
    • Shenir is an unused root word and means to be pointed, peak
  • “Hermon” means destruction, which refers to Christ’s victory on the Cross.
    • Hermon means abrupt, from H2763 ‘to devote’, to religious uses, to be blunt as to the nose, make accursed, consecrate, utterly destroy, devote, forfeit
  • Lions are “roaring
  • Leopards are “swift & fierce
    • These speak of our earthly battles, spiritual warfare (Eph 6:10-12)
    • No matter how bad the battle ‘sounds’ or ‘look’, we must see them from our ‘seated position’ in Christ Jesus

This verse refers to the beast on the mountain tops of Lebanon: Habakkuk 2:17, ““For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the devastation of its beasts by which you terrified them, because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land, to the town and all its inhabitants.” (NASB)

Today we are taking a day away from the devotional of the Song of Songs. Today in history is the FIRST DAY OF CREATION. While other religions ‘start’ their calendar from the founding of the religion, the Jewish calendar begins with Creation, but the year does not change until the ‘creation of mankind’. (Rosh HaShanah) Everything in Creation was in place before man was created.

Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (2) The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (3) Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (4) And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

I truly believe that between verses 1 & 2 there are billions of years. I believe the Bible tells us about 3 periods of Heaven and Earth:

  1. The world that then was (2 Peter 3:6; Gen 1:1-2) dateless past. This is why scientists do not believe the Bible, because they have proven things millions of years old and our Bible covers the past 4000+ years. (2000 from Creation to Abraham, 2000 years from Abraham to Jesus)
  2. The heavens and the earth which are now (2 Peter 3:7; Gen 1:3-2:25) Time began on the 4th day
  3. The new heavens and the new earth (2 Peter 3:13; Isa 65:17; 66:22-24; Rev 21-22

Earth WAS (Hebrew Hayah)- this means fall out, come to pass, become, be, happen, occur, come to pass. God made the earth perfect (Deut 32:4; Ps 111:3, Is 45:18), but by verse 2 there was chaos and confusion. (Isaiah 48:18)

Without Form and Void – “Tohu Va Bohu” (see below)

  • Isaiah 48:18, (NLT) For the LORD is God, and he created the heavens and earth and put everything in place. He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty chaos. “I am the LORD,” he says, “and there is no other.
  • Empty chaos is “tohu va’ bohu’.
    • Tohu means formless confusion, unreality, emptiness, chaos, waste
    • Va – and
    • Bohu – emptiness

Let is a powerful word!! Let there be light. Anytime ‘let’ is used in Creation, it is to turn back on, renew.

Finis Dakes Reference Bible, pg 52 expounds on ‘let”: “Let is used 13 times in this Chapter (1), 1464 times elsewhere, and in no case is an original creative act-implied. The sense is made to appear or made visible, expressing permission and purpose in connection with already existing things. The light, firmament, waters, earth, darkness and all other things mentioned here were already in existence, but had been thrown into chaos and the laws which previously govern annulled because of sin. Now the restoration to perfection and original usefulness, God merely commands and the sun gives light on this planet, as it had done all through Lucifer’s kingdom. (Jer 4:23-26; 2 Peter 3:5-8) Thus the light of days 1, 2, 3 came from the sun as has been the case every day since. Cp. let in Gen 13:8; 18:4; 24:14-18; Mt 7:4; 13:30; 27:22; John 14:1; Phil 2:5; for the true sense.”

On the First Day of Creation the light was not created, it was divided.

This is why the Jewish day begins at sundown. After every day it ends, “So the evening and the morning were the first day”. Evening comes before morning each day. 

 

The King sees her as beautiful and is calling her out of her ‘comfort zone’ – calling her higher!!! She has now made a heart change  (decision of the heart) and he is calling her mature.

Song 4:1, “Behold, you are fair, my love! Behold, you are fair! You have dove’s eyes behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats, going down from Mount Gilead.”

These is agricultural language, a language she is very familiar with, full of idioms. He uses 8 virtues of Agriculture. (8 means ‘new beginning’) For us today, if your husband told you that ‘you have hair like a flock of goats and teeth like a flock of shorn sheep‘, he may be looking a couch for his bed for a few nights.

  • Fair – beautiful. He called her ‘fair’ twice. He is saying over and over again, ‘You are beautiful and I love you’
  • Dove’s Eyes – eyes of single-minded devotion and loyalty. Eyes that speak of insight, revelation (Eph 1:18). Veiled with humility, speaks of the secret life, private. Her eyes are not going to go anywhere that would separate her from him.
  • Hair like Goats -the speaks of her dedication to God.
    • Hair of a Nazarite was his outward sign of commitment to God. Paul spoke of a  woman’s hair showing forth glory (I Cor 11:5,6,15).
  • Flock of Goats – majestic and stately in their walk
  • The goats of Mount Gilead were abundantly fed, very fertile area. She has been fed on the Word and love of God

Song 4:2, “Your teeth are like a flock of shorn sheep which have come up from the washing, every one of which bears twins, and none is barren among them.”

  • Teeth represent chewing; able to receive the ‘meat of the Word’, no longer needing baby nourishment
  • Shorn Sheep are balanced, no longer in danger of falling due to thick coat of wool and  not being able to get back up.
    • Wool represents flesh, natural life. Priests were not to wear wool because it made them sweat.
  • Washing – from the water of the Word of God (Eph 5:26)
  • Twins represents a double portion
  • He is saying that her ministry (to him) is fruitful and not barren

Song 4:3, “Your lips are like a strand of scarlet, and your mouth is lovely. Your temples behind your veil are like a piece of pomegranate.”

  • Lips like scarlet – speech that is redemptive (scarlet symbolic of Blood). Her words ‘buy back’, ‘redeem’ – the words she speaks lift people up to the things of God to a state where they are ordained to be
  • Mouth speaks of intimacy
  • Veiled temples – cheeks, emotions, impacted by the grace of God. Veiled speaks of the ‘hidden life’ that no one else sees
  • Watchman Nee comments, “Only lips that have passed through redemption, that are subject to the Lord’s authority, and that do not speak according to one’ own will have a ‘comely’ speech. The teeth are mentioned before the lips because if something wrong is taken in, whatever comes out will surely be wrong.”

Song 4:4, “Your neck is like the tower of David, built for an armory, on which hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.”

  • Neck like David’s tower – this represents the will & choices.
    • Her mind, will and emotions are set and strong, like David’s tower.
    • A stiff-neck represents pride
    • When an enemy was taken, a foot was put on the neck of the enemy show forced to submit.
    • She willingly submitted to the things of God and her Beloved.

Song 4:5, “Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, which feed among the lilies.”

  • Breasts – this is the power to feed and nurture others
    • Faith and Love are the same size – you cannot have one without the other
  • Fawns – young; the old woman will run dry, but she will continue to flow and feed others
  • Lilies speak of purity and humility

Watchman Nee taught that verses 6-11 were not spoken by the Beloved or his beloved maiden, but rather the Holy Spirit speaking through the inhabitants of Jerusalem. The question of Vs 6 is spoken one of them and the replies that follow are spoken by others, revealing the scene before them.

Song 3:6, “Who is this coming out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the merchant’s fragrant powders?”

What they see in the distant cloud of dust, rising like columns of smoke, approaching from the wilderness. We learn later that it is caused by a progression of men, carrying the Beloved and his beloved maiden on a palanquin.

  • Wildernessmidbar, pasture, uninhabited land, desert, or mouth
  • Pillars of smoke – smoke represents the glory of God in the Tabernacle. Smoke comes out of fire, revealing Holy Spirit investing her with new truth.
  • Myrrh – burial spice, He is perfumed, no longer smells of death, rising to God as a sweet smelling sacrifice; first born from the dead
  • Frankincense – Used in the Holy Place & Holy of Holies.  Jesus is rising to His role as High Priest (Heb 7:25)
  • Merchant Powders – Merchant is singular. This speaks of Jesus’ commitment to us, at a cost of faith and obedience. Matthew 13:45-46; merchant finds a pearl at great price (Church); sold all. 

First Reply: Song 3:7, “Behold, it is Solomon’s couch, with sixty valiant men around it, of the valiant of Israel. (8) They all hold swords, being expert in war. Every man has his sword on his thigh because of fear in the night.’

Solomon’s Couch/Palanquin: a portable enclosed chair, royal wedding bed. Charles Spurgeon preached, “Great princes of the East are in the habit of traveling in splendid palanquins, which are at the same time chariots and beds. The person reclines within, screened by curtains from public view; a body-guard protects the equipage from robbers, and blazing torches light up the path along which the travelers proceed.”

  • This speaks of our rest with Him. Just as the world cannot see Jesus or the Church right now, hidden in spiritual places, but very real.
  • We are seated with Him ABOVE this evil world.  Where He is seated, there are great victories while on earth darkness prevails.
  • 60 Men – There are 60 pillars of support in Moses’ Tabernacle
  • Valiantgibbor, they were mighty and experts of war
  • Fear of the night – demonic powers of darkness

Song 3:9, “Of the wood of Lebanon Solomon the King made himself a palanquin. (10) He made its pillars of silver, its support of gold, its seat of purple, its interior paved with love by (for) the daughters of Jerusalem.”

The King made the palanquin Himself!!! The wood of Lebanon was the most beautiful, fragrant, expensive and strongest of all wood. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” The wood in the Tabernacle was covered with gold because wood represents humanity and gold represents deity. Our life is covered with His grace and all He is.

  • Pillars of Silver – Pillars are what holds up a structure. Silver represents ‘redemption’,
  • Support of Gold – Around the royal seat and base.
    • Support – rĕphiydah, only time used in the Bible. It is the base, the floor, foundation
  • Seat of Purple
    • Seat speaks of our spiritual position, seated with Him in heavenly places, ruling from that seated position IN CHRIST
    • Purple speaks of royalty and authority
  • Interior paved with love (for) the daughters of Jerusalem
    • Pavedratsaph, fit together, patterned, designed.
    • This speaks of the inner workings of God’s love for the entire Church (mature and immature), drawing them to His beauty

Song 3:11, “Go forth, O daughters of Zion, and see King Solomon with the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, the day of the gladness of his heart.”

Mother is the Church.

  • The Crown represents His power and authority to rule as the King. This crown is a ‘wedding crown’ that the Bridegroom wears to the wedding. Even if Jesus has all authority, He will not force us to crown Him, this only comes by ‘voluntary love’.

The Cost of Delay and Reward of Obedience

Song 3:1, By night on my bed I sought the one I love; I sought him, but I did not find him.

Before it was ‘our bed’, now it is ‘my bed’, she stayed behind and did not go with Him.

There are four different ‘nights’ in our spiritual life in which we seek the Lord

  1. The night hours (inconvenience)
  2. The night (dark time) of pain (difficulties)
  3. The night (dark time) of  temptation (struggle, failures)
  4. The dark night of the soul (when you don’t feel His presence, seems like He is gone)

Song 3:2,  “I will rise now,” I said, “and go about the city; in the streets and in the squares I will seek the one I love.” I sought him, but I did not find him.

Verse 1 speaks of seeking him on her bed, but not moving. She just has wishful thinking. Now she arises, just like the prodigal son did in Luke 15:18 when he finally came to his senses.

In this time in our walk, Jesus will purposely make us feel His absence. Deuteronomy 4:29 and I Chronicles 28:9 tell  us that if we seek Him with all our heart we will find Him.

Song 3:3,  The watchmen who go about the city found me; I said, “Have you seen the one I love?”

The city is Jerusalem, speaking of Heavenly places. This is the first evidence of reviving affections, now she is getting desperate. She leaves the comfort of her bed, but the watchman cannot find Jesus for you! We have got to realize that Jesus wants us personally to seek Him with out whole heart. Ministers can teach, lay hand on you for healing, give a prophetic word……but there is no person who can bring you into that intimate place with Jesus.

Matthew Henry comments, “Those that would seek Christ so as to find him must lose no time.”

Song 3:4,  Scarcely had I passed by them, When I found the one I love. I held him and would not let him go, until I had brought him to the house of my mother, and into the chamber of her who conceived me.

She found him! She found the one she loves! It is better than comfort, it is better than hanging with the daughters of Jerusalem. She only found him when she rose up out of obedience and desperation. Desperate times require desperate seeking.

House of my mother: Church, Body of Christ, those who hurt her. Remember how they had misused her beyond her strength in Chapter 1, now she is allowing him to go to the wounds, the hurts.

Chamber of her who conceived me: to your closest family members. A place of smallness, those who have no respect for her faith, they are all too familiar with her failures.

She held him, would not let her go until he went with her to the areas of hurt in her life. The greatest hurt will come from Church people you trust and family members. But we need to forgive and go on. Only when she is emotionally delivered will she be able to go on in obedience and follow him no matter what.

But she holds onto him, she wants it on her terms. He is not yet Lord.

Now the King speaks protection over her.

Song 3:5, I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or by the does of the field, Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases.

3 times he gives this charge: 2:6; 3:5; 8:4. All 3 times he is speaking to the immature believers to not allow any distraction to the maiden, Jesus is not finished with us yet.

 

The Battle between Flesh and Spirit. 

Songs 2:16, “My beloved is mine, and I am his. He feeds his flock among the lilies.”

The maiden is understanding her failure to rise when called. How she boldly confesses her relationship with Him. This is her 2nd confession of her heart’s progression to give it totally for the King-Bridegroom.

  1. 1:14, “My beloved is to me”–  all about self, what Jesus can do for her
  2. 2:15, “My beloved is mine and I am His” – Ownership, show she needs to love Him
  3.  6:3, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine” – His agenda first, then my agenda
  4. 7:10, “I am my beloved’s, and His desire is toward me” – His desire is all I want, totally sold out!

He has fed her several times (1:7,12; 2:4-5) This time the feeding will come with a costly price.

  • Humble place, like how the ‘lilies of the valley’ hang down, her life will be as in surrender. This is a place of purity and obedience. In Chapter 2:1, she spoke of herself as ‘a lily’, now she sees the ‘corporate, Church, lost sheep’ assignment. She will connect with the pure in heart and sincere seekers to follow Him no matter the cost. What about you, are you ready and willing to pay that cost to go beyond you self?
    • Lilies of the Valley

Songs 2:17, “Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag upon the mountains of Bether.”

Now we see she has counted the cost, and she turns back away. “Turn, come back soon. You go ahead, I am staying here, waiting for a more opportune time.”

Okay, now we realize that her spirit was willing but her flesh is weak. She has made another excuse, another delay and failure of obedience. Sound familiar. Yes, like when He starts speaking to me about my body being the temple of the Holy Spirit and I need to keep it strong for ministry……but then by the end of the day I say ‘tomorrow’ I will go to gym.

  • Until the Day breakstomorrow? or does she know herself too well that she is afraid of failure again. Too many time she has tried and quit
  • Shadows flee away – memories of failed attempts, the enemy is always in the shadows, reminding us of our weaknesses and failures
  • Bether – ‘separation‘ cutting or cleaving, such as cutting an animal sacrifice in half
    • The Mountains are obstacles that bring separation (plural)
    • She knows this will separate them, but fear of failure is holding her back
