Tishri 14, 5773 – Feast of Tabernacles Begins at Sundown (9/30/12)

Psalm 91:1 (HNV) “He who dwells in the secret place of Ha`Elyon will rest in the shadow of Shaddai. (2) I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust.”

This may sound like a strange scripture for Tabernacles, but this is where we need to live (rest, abide) live right now!!

The custom of the Jewish people is to build a small tabernacle (succot, booths) outside their house and spend time in that temporary building. As they rest in the tabernacle, they would recall how the Hebrew children were taken care of for 40 years in the Wilderness journey. But today I don’t want to look back, but to be totally aware of our protection for today.

To understand where I am teaching today you will need a little understanding of the Law of First Mention. The “law of first-mention” is the principle in the interpretation of Scripture which states that the first mention or occurrence of a subject in Scripture establishes an unchangeable pattern, with that subject remaining unchanged in the mind of God throughout Scripture.

The first time we find the word shadow is in the story of Lot in the city of Sodom in Genesis 19. The angels of the LORD (who looked like men) had come into the city to bear witness to the wickedness. Before God can pass judgment there has to be 2 or 3 witnesses. Lot urged them to come and stay with him and his family for their safety. While they were in Lot’s house, they broke unleavened bread with Lot (the first mention of unleavened bread in the Bible).

When the men of Sodom came to demand to have sex with the angels, Lot’s reply was “See now, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and do you to them as is good in your eyes. Only don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

First of all, I know what you are thinking.  Why did Lot say they could have his daughters? Lot knew they were not interested in women, but they were only interested in sodomizing men, a word that came from the sins of the city of Sodom.

But don’t miss the best point!  The angels came under covenant with Lot when they broke bread, which is a custom still held in the East. When you are in covenant, the other party will protect you no matter what it costs!!  The covenant made with bread and wine is stronger that your natural bloodline family.

This was God’s way, and it is the best way.  When Jesus broke bread with His disciples at what is now referred to as the Last Supper, He took the wine and said, ” and having taken the cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them, saying, `Drink ye of it — all; for this is my blood of the new covenant, that for many is being poured out — to remission of sins.” (YLT)  The Blood Covenant is still in force today, is still able to protect all who come under it and has never lost its power!!!

TODAY, MAKE YOUR ETERNAL SUCCOT UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY.  Allow Him to be your refuge and fortress. That eternal covenant will always be your safest place of safety in the midst of a storm!
